From HitFix:

With movie studios seemingly in permanent remake/reboot/remodel mode, we thought it was a good time to run down some films from the new century that should be off limits. We’ve already made an argument for films from the 90’s and from the 80’s, but somewhere in the dark crevices of Hollywood there’s a studio executive just waiting to get their hands on the rights to eventually remake “Drive,” “Kill Bill,” “Once” and even “Superbad.”

Don’t Make These Remakes in the Future

The Psyning

We posted about how Psy has affected pop culture before with Han Solo.  This is an equally awesome mash up that combines Gangnam Style with Stanley Kubrik’s The Shining.  I personally like this one even more just solely based from Shelley Duvall’s reaction whilst holding a knife.  Anyone else think this Gungnam fad will fade out eventually?

The Lincoln Reloaded

This is a cool image from Jason Heuser, be sure to visit his Etsy to check out all his work.  So this is a cool image from his that combines President Abraham Lincoln with The Matrix graphic.  It seems as though his artwork is based on famous American figures in pop culture.  He’s also got Paul Revere on a Tron bike, Barack Obama on a mountain lion, and Ronald Reagan riding a velociraptor.  I’ve included those below.

There are several ‘Annie Vs. Britta Debates’ on the internet.  By Annie Vs. Britta debates, I mean take two female characters of any show and deciding who I would rather be in a relationship with.  While this seems pitiful at first, you can’t help but have thought this about any show you watched. The choices includes personality, looks, attitude, etc.  I read a cool article that brought up 10 cases that should be looked at here.  Now I’ll admit that I haven’t seen all 10 of the shows, but I do have strong opinions on the ones I have seen.  It’s also a reasonable excuse to post pictures of my favorite characters of some of my favorite tv shows at their best moments.

Check out my breakdown below.  Minor Spoilers About.

Engadget did a great interview with John Hodgman concerning the “death of publishing” and “being a Mac trapped in a PC’s Body.”

(Macs) were technology that made sense to me because they seemed to want to bend to how a human thinks as opposed to asking a human to bend to how a machine thinks — which is exciting and fun for a lot of people, but not for me.

I have a strange obsession with Harley Quinn.  Harley Quinn was once Dr. Harley Quinzel, a psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum.  She became fascinated with the Joker and became his needy assistant by acting as his partner in crime.  She’s always been a bubbly and villainous character, but I’ve been fascinated at her loss of sanity due to the power of the Joker.   As of late, she’s been highly sexualized by the Arkham games so I decided to draw her based on her Batman: The Animated Series.  Enjoy!  Seeing as it’s October, it’s a good excuse to draw a bunch of weird and creepy things, so look forward to all of that this month.

A relatively calm week on Banana Scoop.  Nothing too new or crazy.  The biggest news below.

We Tried to Change Our Theme and Failed Miserably

Last Friday, I tried to do something silly by changing themes.  I looked at what the best WordPress themes had to offer and tried to activate and tweak some things.  I tried to Google some things about the best WordPress themes, but many of them were for the WordPress.org themes.  I’ve tried hard into trying a magazine style where we can keep some of the better articles at the top.  A lot of the [free] themes don’t offer enough customization and enough creative freedom, so in my frustration, I reverted back to this old theme.  In the end, I truly mean to migrate to a new site where I can web design and have the customization and creative freedom.

Weekend Funnies:10.6.2012

If there’s anything Weekend Funnies have taught me, is that not everyone has the same sense of humor.  But the internet is a generally a collection of everyone and the sheer compilation of the wit and humor that each individual contributes essentially represents the most broadest and generalist appeals to mankind.  So when I choose the 24 images for each Weekend Funny, I know the reason I think it’s funny will be at least funny to some percentage of the world.  And even if the it’s the smallest 1%, 1% of 7 billion is still 700 million.  So I apologize if you’re offended, disgusted, or upset.  Truth be told, if you can’t handle these 24 images, you likely shouldn’t be on the internet anyways.  So stop worrying about racism, sexism, and other means of being upset.  Just keep scrolling, and remember: no one’s looking, it’s okay to smile at something someone would frown upon.

This is a really freaking cool graphic.  And it’s really freaking big, so I included a preview of the image here and then if you hit more, you can get the humungous image afterwards.  This is from Michael Hobson from Tremulent Design, where he essentially compiles the best of all sci-fi/futuristic movies and puts them onto a timeline.  It ranges from 2012 to as far as year 10191.  I haven’t seen a quite a number of these, so if I don’t recognize the title, I try not to read it to be aware of spoilers.  I also really like that he tells us to ‘prepare’ for the future.  Seeing as 2012 is wrapping up, a pretty quick vampiric pandemic needs to happen if I Am Legend needs to occur.  But maybe this all doesn’t matter if the 2012 disaster actually happens..Bah who are we kidding, no one actually believes that mumbo jumbo do they?

Regardless, this is a really cool graphic and I highly suggest you check out.

Movie 43

I just saw this earlier today, and thought I’d share it with our lovely BananaScoop audience. This is a trailer for a movie titled ‘Movie 43’, featuring an awesome lineup of people. While I have reservations about movies that remind me too much of the ‘movie’ series, such as Date Movie, Scary Movie, etc., I just couldn’t help but giggle at some of the brash and somewhat offensive humor they used in the trailer alone. I may not go out to watch this movie when it finally releases, but I think I’ll definitely be keeping tabs on it in the mean time, especially after seeing Gerard Butler transformed into leprechaun.

I got around to finally watching Prometheus having skipped out on it when it was out in theaters.  I didn’t really know what to expect as a whole although I did watch the trailer and was pleasantly surprised on how hair raising it was.  Therefore, I wasn’t too surprised and even disappointed when I saw the movie and thought it to be as hair raising and spine tingling as the trailer.  Ridley Scott sure knows how to make a pretty damn entertaining movie.  The cast is great, with special shout-out to Michael Fassbender’s David.  The writers however have another issue coming at them, while they did pen a great cast of personalities and create an interesting premise, they ultimately failed to deliver on the bringing the story to some descent closure.  First a short summary and then read on below for a SPOILER FILLED  critique and review as well as hopefully the beginning of a great discussion on a definite “love it/hate it” type movie.

Dr. Shaw (Noomi Rapace) and Dr. Holloway (Logan Marshall-Green) are archeologists/anthropologists [I’m not entirely sure on what their profession is, seeing as they’re pretty well versed in a lot of stuff regarding humanity] who have found an alien connection throughout human history.  They appeal to a research and development company to charter a 2 year journey to an obscure planet.  Joining them are a crew of geologists, biologists, pilots, an android and commanding officers.  When they arrive on the planet they find themselves far more over their heads than thought possible.

From Uproxx

In the years following the original Arrested Development run comedy nerds — yours truly included — have been going out of their way to point out to anyone who will listen just how brilliant the show is/was. One common way of going about that on the internet is the good ole easter eggs/buried joke/running gag/layered bit list. They’re everywhere. You can get lost for days in the AD Wikia. Even earlier this week our friends at Splitsider put together quite the comprehensive guide to buried jokes that is a must check out for anyone already nervous about their Instant streaming quality come 2013.

And now with David Cross telling Rolling Stone that what Mitch Hurwitz is doing with the revival of the show is so “layered” that it “makes Lost look like a Spalding Grey monologue” I officially have to get in on the action. But I’m not looking to put together a thesis, just an easily digestible crash course to the subtle, layered jokes that anyone who considers themselves a fan of the Bluths should be aware of going into their much-anticipated return.

Arrested Development Trivia Gems

I love watching something, seeing a familiar actor from a certain television show or movie, and then yelling, “hey it’s [insert characters name] from [insert television]!”  In this case, I guess this happened a couple of years ago when I first saw Firefly.  One of the flashbacks roll around regarding a young version of Simon and River Tam at their household.  When I saw Zac Efron, all I could see was a young Troy Bolton being conflicted with his choice about doing sports or singing songs rather than the difficult decisions he’s going to go through to saving his sister from the government.  I guess it turned out okay for both of them in the end.  Simon Tam ended up saving his sister and ‘boning’ Kaylee, the mechanic, and Zac Efron went on to do Hairspray and that reverse gender/plot 13 going on 30.

Happy endings for all.

The Dark Knight Rises came out last summer, but every once in a while, I stumble upon a cool collection of interesting things regarding the very popular movie.  Despite having a nearly 3 hour run time, it’s pretty obvious that movie had some plot holes.  Many people have tried to use them to tarnish the movie and others go to extreme lengths to refute them.  However, Jest has compiled a very cool way of compiling the plot holes by making them satirical newspaper headlines.  Check out the rest of them below and then refute any of them if you thought of a way to get around it!

Borderlands 2 Overview

Alrighty folks, so even though I haven’t really beaten the game yet, I’ve decided to give a ‘work in progress’ kind of review concerning the fancy new game I’m sure we’ve all been sinking our teeth into lately. While a lot of hype was generated for this title, I’ve had a lot of people asking me whether or not it would be a good idea to pick it up if they didn’t really enjoy the original. Bottom line, my answer is no. Borderlands 2 works by improving an already fun formula for those of us who enjoyed it, and while it brings a lot more upgraded stuff of the same type, it doesn’t truly redefine the mechanics, gameplay or storytelling potential of the original. The plot is definitely a lot more in-depth and detailed with tons of wacky characters, but I think if you simply didn’t enjoy the original, you won’t enjoy this one. Anyway, continue forth to read on about what’s going on in my head concerning Borderlands 2. Continue Reading »

How could you not love Emma Watson?

From Uproxx:

Speaking of adult things: Watson’s first major post-Harry Potter film, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, based on the novel of the same name, expands into more theaters after last week’s limited release. In it, she plays someone who isn’t Hermoine Granger, which is a good thing because Watson, as we’ve previously made clear, is quite lovely. She’s like K-Stew, but likable, charming, and a good actress. OK, so she’s nothing like K-Stew, and neither are you, which is why you should enjoy this collection of Watson’s finest “adult” GIFs.

Collegehumor has awesomely created this photoshop series where they shop Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney’s face onto popular romantic comedy posters.  We’ve featured a couple of other Election 2102 images, but as I’ve mentioned, I don’t really want to polarize this site [despite our current 2012 poll has Obama up 11-0, so at least we know how liberal our viewers are].  Anywho, these are just a little bit of fun especially because Romney’s face is pretty funny in some of these photoshops.  Check out the micro gallery I’ve included below and check out the rest of them at Collegehumor.

StarCrafts

I’ve been perusing the internet as of late and found something incredibly interesting to keep track of. StarCrafts is a series of short animations involving the units from the universe of Blizzard’s Starcraft. It gives a certain personality to the characters involved, and makes the normally serious atmosphere of the game relatively childish and fun (personally my favorites are the dog-like zerglings or the short, pudgy marines). There are a total of 7 episodes out right now, with more on the way in a relatively timely fashion. Hopefully you all enjoy the videos.

Review: Salmon Fishing in the Yemen

Salmon Fishing in the Yemen was perhaps my most anticipated film voyage as of late apart from maybe Perks of Being a Wallflower. The British film is based off of a novel of the same name by Paul Torday. It premiered at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival and achieved widespread release in 2012. The premise is eccentric and endearing. Ewan McGregor and Emily Blunt are the dream team of charm. And there is something romantic to me about salmon. I want to start this review of “Salmon Fishing” the way one of my favorite movies 500 Days of Summer began. This is the story of a boy meets movie, “but you should know upfront, this is not a love story.” Continue Reading »

This summer was an enormous superhero release time with big players like The Avengers and Dark Knight Rises.  Hitfix decided to compile the best of the best in gallery form.  You’ll get your traditional stuff like The Dark Knight and Incredibles, but they leave out some of my favorites and include even one I didn’t recognize.  Rocketeer?  Never heard of ya’.
