Something to Fear.  What Comes After.  March to War.  These are the names of the three latest volumes on the shelf of Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead comic.  The names themselves are fairly cryptic, marking some of what I’ve read to be incredible set ups to The Walking Dead’s most memorable villain since the Governor.  Almost two years ago, I got my first two comic books for Christmas: The Walking Dead Compendium Volumes 1 & 2.  They were both 1000 pages long, and I absolutely crushed through them in a manner of a week.  The Walking Dead holds a close place in my heart as the first comic I’ve read and has recently inspired madness in collecting as many comics and graphic novels as possible.

It was very fitting that two years later on Christmas 2013, I obtained the three recent volumes of the The Walking Dead after the 2nd Compendium ended on.  I finally got around to finishing these three and I got so gleeful that I simply had to write about all the feelings I’m feeling.

  • An incredible new villain
  • More dying of favorite characters
  • Introduction and Reinforcement of Awesome Newer Characters
  • New revelations

So below are summaries and feelings of what I’ve been reading through.

Major Spoilers of The Walking Dead Comic Series to Follow

Spring television is in full force and a plethora of shows have premiered while others have continued.  If I had to choose between hype for Fall 2013 television and Spring 2014 television, just writing about this line up makes me believe that Spring 2014 television just might trump whatever Fall 2013 aired [and that might include Breaking Bad…].  I say this because a lot of two-season (Fall to Spring) shows begin doing their crazy stunts and plot twists during sweeps week as  their seasons wrap up.  This means shit hits the fan for multiple shows, sometimes all at once, creating some of the memorable television shows of the year.  This week’s post will reflect on what’s been aired so far as well as a small preview of what’s to come in the following weeks.

2013 was a pretty incredible year for television [as if there aren’t years of incredible television], but I found it very fun to go back and take a look at the best episodes of the year.  Although Fall television is still pretty fresh in my head, I found a lot of joy in going back into Spring 2013 television to recall how great some of those episode were.  Below, I’ve compiled the television shows and their corresponding episodes to go back and relive some of the greatest television episodes of 2013.

Minor spoilers below.

To put it lightly, I think I nearly doubled my game library this year.  I had a well paying job that allowed me to splurge for myself in ways I really haven’t in the past.  With all this new disposable income [insert ‘Thanks Obama’ meme here], I managed to purchase a number of games I’ve never played before in addition to the many incredible releases that came out this year.  And as a year ends, it’s pretty obvious that every blogger in the world is going to be coming up with the “Best of 2013” lists.  So naturally I’m just doing my duty as another blogger, who doesn’t have the time or wit to come up with something more original.

Truth be told, the number 1 shouldn’t surprise you, it’s pretty much one of the greatest games I’ve ever played, but it might be interesting to see the other games I’ve taken a hand at this past year.  If you’re doubting my nerd cred, these games do not take into account the older games that were released in other times that I’ve picked up [These titles include Minecraft, League of Legends, and Shadow the Colossus, Sly Cooper, etc].

For a while now, The Walking Dead franchise has been buzzing like a fly around manure.  The cult comic book got a television adaptation that brought the names Rick Grimes & Daryl Dixon to becoming a household name.  Unfortunately, the original creator of the characters, Robert Kirkman, still isn’t so much a household name, nor is his glorious comic book.  A year ago, two games carrying the franchise name were inevitably released.  One revolved around the television show’s original creations, The Dixon brothers, and was critically panned.  The other one, which was created by Telltale Games, was more based on the universe created from Kirkman’s comic book and generated an enormous amount of buzz, even gathering several Game of the Year rewards.

So what made the comic book adaptation game better than the television adaptation game?  It must be better zombie killing weapons or better graphics right?  Wrong.  Telltale’s The Walking Dead is much different from any other game I’ve ever played, and it’s one game that I won’t long forget for a long time.

Minor spoilers from the game, none that will ruin your experience.

You’re put into the body of Lee Everett, who is a college professor on his way to prison after murdering the man who his wife cheated on with.  The zombie apocalypse gives him a second chance when he runs into a young girl, Clementine.  Amongst thousands of zombies, untrusting allies, and brutal mercenaries, Lee finds himself doing whatever it takes to protect Clementine.

So about last year, I really started getting into comic books and graphic novels.  Back then, I primarily stuck with graphic novels, stories that had distinct endings and were no longer in continuation.  The primary reason I did this was because I wasn’t sure that I wanted to get into the monthly issue release that would warrant me spending money and money over time and again.  So as the year progressed, I had successfully finished some of the greatest graphic novels out there: Watchmen, Wanted, The Dark Knight Returns, Black Hole, along with volumes and compendiums of the most popular story arcs such as The Long Halloween, The Walking Dead Compendium I + II, and Kick-Ass.  Now that I’m nearing the point where there aren’t many graphic novels left that I haven’t heard of.

So I’ve begun getting into series that are now ongoing, finding that they’re even more exhilarating because it’s like I’m joining a number of fan-bases that are eagerly awaiting the release of the next issue.  It’s a similar feeling as waiting for The Winds of Winter, or the next Superman vs. Batman movie.  With anticipation, there is some form of unification of a fanbase that spawns theories, speculations, and the like.

So today we’re going to talk about some of the comic books that I’m reading and some that I plan on beginning to read. Minor spoils ahead!

rick on what we are

At San Diego Comic Con, there were a lot of news bombs dropped in terms of movies, television, and books.  AMC released an amazingly well put together trailer for season 4 of the Walking Dead.  Season 3 and show runner Glenn Mazarra took an amazing step forward in realizing what the Walking Dead had the potential to be, but after differences between book creator, Robert Kirkman and Glenn Mazarra, the show let Mazarra go.

Scott Gimple took the reins, who is credited for some of the show’s strongest episodes such as Sophie’s status after the barn and Rick’s memorable reencounter with the psychologically damaged Morgan.  This has already created potential for making season 4 the strongest season yet.  And as a book reader, I have quite the idea of what this season will be centered on.

This article is NOT meant TV-only fans, it is meant for comic book readers who have finished the prison arc.

If you do not want to be spoiled, LEAVE NOW before I ruin the show for you.  Once again, this article/discussion is only for book readers and those who want to be spoiled.

Parks and Recreation - Season 5

It’s no secret that my love for television extends beyond many of my other loves.  These include video games, movies, drawing, books, and comic books.  Doing these recaps are my favorite because it allows you to share with everyone about your favorite shows and gives others a chance to chime in their opinions on what I’m missing out on!  Trust me, these kind of things actually happen because it’s because of my readers that I got into Modern Family!

Anywho, Winter/Spring television is very much started and some shows only have a week or two left before their finales, but I figured now would be a good time to recap on what’s happened and why you should pick up on the shows I’m watching!  11 Shows this season, can you keep up?

There’s a lot of fear in those eyes, but damn if they’re not absolutely stunning

I fall in love easily with fictional characters, so this list was incredibly easy to make.  I just took a look at the 12 shows I’m watching and picked some of the people I simply light up to when the show comes on.  Naturally, writing this article made me swoon [can men swoon?] and certainly feel feelings within me that I should be embarrassed to feel about fictional characters.  But I ultimately didn’t care.  Being single myself, these fictional women are all I have to care about.  They may not keep me warm at night, but they certainly know how to burn hours of my life with nothing to show for..

wait what?

Pretty Serious Spoilers from respective shows below!

The Walking Dead

Dexter

American Horror Story: Asylum

The Walking Dead returns this week and it’s a good time to start hyping up for it.  This is a cool picture from Cabm84 that combines two really awesome things: AMC’s the Walking Dead and Plants vs. Zombies.  Being huge fans of both, this picture really captures everything I love about pop culture.  The picture has a couple of little interesting tidbits here and there: using the pea shooters as guns, cherry bombs as a grenade-on-the-belt type thing.  Walnuts in the background guarding the sunflowers in the back.  You can see the Gargantuar in the background and then the multiple types in front of the bus. I hope he does another scene including more plant types, as I can really see how creative you can get with ’em.

My graphic novel obsession has begun.  I recently dropped $70 on new books [a considerable amount for a college student], on a bundle of new graphic novels/comic books.  Barnes and Noble’s online store had a buy 2 DC comics, get a third one free was too much of a deal and I had to buy 6.  When they came in, despite being in the middle of Mockingjay (a review later this week), I made some of them a priority in reading.  In this article, I include my initial impressions of graphic novels and a relatively spoiler free impression of the ones I did read.

My New Graphic Novels

  • League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Vol. 1 & 2
  • Watchmen
  • The Killing Joke
  • Dark Victory
  • A Long Halloween

Breaking Bad is less than a week away.  I stand by saying that it’s the best television series on air.  The pretense is engulfing, the drama intense, and the characters extremely engrossing.  This video essentially sums up 4 amazing seasons and it’s easy to see Walter White’s dark descent into the criminal underworld.  Attached to the classically amazing Requiem for a Dream soundtrack, I dare this video to not send shivers up your spine.

The Walking Dead redeemed itself in its season 2 finale.  And from everything I’m hearing it’s gearing up to be the most exciting plot line next.  Warming Glow has compiled a list of 3 reasons why: the new characters introduced.  We got a glimpse at one of them, the sword wielding figure in the hood, but who are the others?  Click below and find out why the Walking Dead may have its best season yet.

From artist Boo21190, whose stylized as Anna Rettberg has created quite possibly the best collection of television characters as they hang out.  I want to play a game with you, how many can you possibly name?  After staring intently for 2-3 minutes I was able to get about 21/26 [I included the three ships in the window, 27 if you can name that obscure building lol and 30 if you count the pets, one of which I’m guessing is Sabrina’s cat]  I’ll admit however that I can’t name the faces of all of them, but I know at least what show they’re from.  I dare you to do better.  Below after the jump is my answer key.  Only visit if you’ve counted up yourself

This is immensely cool map for anyone living in the United States.  This is very similar to Google maps where you can type in your address and see the stores and stuff around your area.  The best part of this map is the fact that it’s catered to surviving a zombie apocalypse.  The stores you’ll see are your malls, gun shops, police stations, etc.  It’s very creative and awesome map.  Be sure to check your chances if/when the zombie apocalypse comes.

A couple of weeks ago, I did a post relating vampire movies worth your while.  I got a lot of support and feedback on that, so I turned to another monster genre that held it’s own for it’s success.  Zombie movies are generally a lot different from the general vampire movie.  While vampire movies are more based on the ideas of eternal love, the sexual aspect of blood sucking, and the drama of hiding from the light, zombie movies are more related to the strength of human kind in the face of Apocalypse and the bad-assery of killing as many zombies as possible.  Hit the jump for the list of awesome zombie movies.  I apologize for missing some, especially any really early zombie movies.
