My favorite movies are the ones that allow me to connect the story to my own life so that I can explore what it means to be happy and fulfilled in real time with the characters of the film. There are exceedingly few films however that have the ability to produce such a cathartic effect on me. I must be transfixed, lost, entranced. Often Hollywood movies are too formulaic and conventional to provide the realism psyche uppercut that I crave. When you feel as though you’ve seen the movie a thousand times before you are much more likely to remember that you are indeed watching a movie. That is why offbeat, low-budget films are so appealing to me. The filmmaker is often not trying to break box records; they are attempting to communicate a narrative. Independent films are the fresh squeezed orange juice that I wish everyone could appreciate on a hot day. I happen to believe that life is strange, confusing, and messy so when I see films described by these adjectives it does not strike me as a negative thing.  I flock towards it in hopes of a stronger connection with the story.

Another ingredient for a truly powerful tale is great acting. If the characters are not genuine, sympathetic, and believable your chances of connecting the film to your life are slim. At the risk of sounding like an art snob (although I like to think I’m not so sensitive to be ashamed of what I prefer) I want to mention that independent films have a boosted believability factor due to the less famous actors/actresses that they often feature. It takes extraordinary talent to overcome stardom and continue to create unique characters. And thankfully there are many that possess this talent. But sometimes even that is not enough. I love Matt Damon but every time I see him in a movie I can’t help but think about all of his other roles that I have seen him play. That does not mean that I do not enjoy his movies, it means I can’t connect to his character in a way that I feel he is real.  There are so many factors that go into a film that teleports you completely and gives you sublime reflection. The most important factor however is that the subject matter sparks your interest. This is my review of a movie I just saw that defines all of the favorable things that I just wrote about. This is my review of Jeff Who Lives at Home from the writing/directing team of Jay and Mark Duplass. (more…)

Engadget did a great interview with John Hodgman concerning the “death of publishing” and “being a Mac trapped in a PC’s Body.”

(Macs) were technology that made sense to me because they seemed to want to bend to how a human thinks as opposed to asking a human to bend to how a machine thinks — which is exciting and fun for a lot of people, but not for me.

I just saw this earlier today, and thought I’d share it with our lovely BananaScoop audience. This is a trailer for a movie titled ‘Movie 43’, featuring an awesome lineup of people. While I have reservations about movies that remind me too much of the ‘movie’ series, such as Date Movie, Scary Movie, etc., I just couldn’t help but giggle at some of the brash and somewhat offensive humor they used in the trailer alone. I may not go out to watch this movie when it finally releases, but I think I’ll definitely be keeping tabs on it in the mean time, especially after seeing Gerard Butler transformed into leprechaun.

Alrighty folks, so even though I haven’t really beaten the game yet, I’ve decided to give a ‘work in progress’ kind of review concerning the fancy new game I’m sure we’ve all been sinking our teeth into lately. While a lot of hype was generated for this title, I’ve had a lot of people asking me whether or not it would be a good idea to pick it up if they didn’t really enjoy the original. Bottom line, my answer is no. Borderlands 2 works by improving an already fun formula for those of us who enjoyed it, and while it brings a lot more upgraded stuff of the same type, it doesn’t truly redefine the mechanics, gameplay or storytelling potential of the original. The plot is definitely a lot more in-depth and detailed with tons of wacky characters, but I think if you simply didn’t enjoy the original, you won’t enjoy this one. Anyway, continue forth to read on about what’s going on in my head concerning Borderlands 2. (more…)

I’ve been perusing the internet as of late and found something incredibly interesting to keep track of. StarCrafts is a series of short animations involving the units from the universe of Blizzard’s Starcraft. It gives a certain personality to the characters involved, and makes the normally serious atmosphere of the game relatively childish and fun (personally my favorites are the dog-like zerglings or the short, pudgy marines). There are a total of 7 episodes out right now, with more on the way in a relatively timely fashion. Hopefully you all enjoy the videos.

Growing up amidst the all encompassing world of modern societal media, it is no surprise that a lifetime of movies depicting everyday life has begun to effect how many of us view our own lives. Sometimes the influences of movies have effects we aren’t even aware of, but are simply embedded in our minds and accepted as fact. I will describe some of these interesting facts below, and illustrate some examples of cinematic misinformation.

Hey-Oh, what’s up!?  Another update on how we’re progressing here on Banana Scoop with a couple of new details on what we’ll be working on for the next week or so.  It’s primarily art announcements where I’m talking about some new icons and pictures I want to replace here and there.  The biggest story of the week is how we recently reached 100,000 views overall which is a big deal for a small blog like ourselves.  Check out the full update below!

An Incredible Marker, our 100,000th Hit

Banana Scoop has some fantastic news to share with you all!  It has received over 100,000 hits in total since it’s first conception!  We’re incredibly blessed and over the year ago I started this blog, there have been a combination of both good and bad times.  The older times where, I was all alone with deadlines all over the place and the good times where I was fortunate enough to be Freshly Pressed, twice.

Thought Provoking TED Talk

So this was a really interesting TED talk that I decided I’d share with you guys. It discusses a rather interesting topic, but I’ll let you guys watch it and make your own decisions concerning it. It’s rather intriguing how many different opinions and viewpoints from the world that are discussed in this particular talk that resonate with the events of today’s world. Hopefully you guys draw your own conclusions concerning this particular talk, and comment with how you guys feel or why you feel that way.

iPhone 5 Review

Please don’t mind this as it was almost 2 in the morning when I wrote it, and I’m incredibly tired. So, I was lucky enough to be able to get my hands on an iPhone 5 today. As such, I thought I’d write an awesome review about it here on banana scoop. I will try to keep the following article as unbiased as possible with consideration to the Galaxy SIII, which is a monster in its own right. This will primarily be about the iPhone, however, so if you have a penchant for hating on apple products, then leave it at the door. Feel free to read more about my in-depth first look in the article below. (more…)

Alrighty, for all you good little boys and girls I have brought gifts! Embedded within the wondrous and wacky environments within Borderlands 2, there are a multitude of fancy little tidbits that you can find hidden within the most inconspicuous of places. Gearbox developers have done well in including almost every single major pop culture reference they could pack into such a great game. With character customizations detailed after comic book villains and claptrap’s homage to the double rainbow guy, there is no end to the fun in sight (unless you have the bane, in which case I feel for you). Either way, check out the awesome link below to find a variety of Easter eggs and where to find some of them.

Urban Dictionary defines a hardcore gamer as “someone who plays video games as a primary hobby. They tend to spend large amounts of time playing games, often in excess of two or three hours a day.” As many hardcore gamers as there are out there I’m willing to bet there are even more softcore gamers. Young kids who love Mario Cart, weekend warriors with an Xbox 360 in the man cave, or university students like me who are just trying to improve their Starcraft II ranking. The first thing I was told when I got to college was that between a social life, good grades, and sleep, you can only pick two. What if I want it all and to play games?

My graphic novel obsession has begun.  I recently dropped $70 on new books [a considerable amount for a college student], on a bundle of new graphic novels/comic books.  Barnes and Noble’s online store had a buy 2 DC comics, get a third one free was too much of a deal and I had to buy 6.  When they came in, despite being in the middle of Mockingjay (a review later this week), I made some of them a priority in reading.  In this article, I include my initial impressions of graphic novels and a relatively spoiler free impression of the ones I did read.

My New Graphic Novels

  • League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Vol. 1 & 2
  • Watchmen
  • The Killing Joke
  • Dark Victory
  • A Long Halloween

Banana Scoop has had its break and it’s been absolutely wonderful.  Our writers were given a break and prepared some really great articles with our newfound reinvigoration.  There’s a lot of neat stuff we’ve planned and want to feature in the coming weeks, like a greater About Us section, a DMCA statement, and then some other things we’ve put on the back burner for a while.  The Scoops gonna come back harder than ever.  Buckle in and prep yourselves.

About Us is Also Live

The long awaited About Us Page is up that features a mini biography about each of our authors.  Be sure to visit that page to contact us and get to know us more.  It would be really neat to further expand this section to include a history section about the what this site franchise has been through [it’s not THAT exciting, but I’ll add a few ninjas and damsels and distress to spice things up.]

I stumbled upon this pretty amazing rendition of the familiar robots we know and love from Pixar’s Wall-E. Here they are sporting much more mature looks complete with megaman-like arm cannons and a gatling gun mounted over Wall-E’s shoulder. I should point out here that they remind me more of Aperture test robots than they do anything from the movie, but I’m actually pretty okay with that. Anyway, I hope you guys enjoy the picture, and if you want to see more, check out the artist’s deviantart below in the source!.

iPhone 5

The time is upon us! Releasing on the exact same day (or at least shipping) as Borderlands 2, the iPhone 5 will hit shelves this month to what Apple hopes to be record breaking sales. People already predict that the sales of the new apple device will help the GDP by an unprecedented .5%, which is pretty freaking ridiculous considering that a single gadget could bolster our economy in that way. We’ll have to wait to see the numbers, however, and will just have to be content drooling over the new pictures and screen shots we got from today’s Apple conference. I’ll cover a few of the really intriguing upgrades in the body of this article. (more…)

Google Car

Prepare yourselves to be amazed! The google car is here on a test drive to show just how far into the future they intend to take us. With a really interesting set of clips from throughout the day, we see just how awesome Google is at innovation and re-defining the limits of technology. The self-driving car takes us through fast food joints and makes a stop at a laundromat, showcasing both its ability to pay attention to traffic and park. Never more will one have to worry about parallel parking! Actually, I’m not quite sure how this vehicle would handle some of the finer aspects of driving, but I’m definitely excited to see what the finished product will end up like if this ever reaches the production stage!

Judd Apatow is an American film producer, director, writer, and screenwriter. His American film/television production company Apatow Productions pumps out quality comedy with a vengeance. If you aren’t familiar with the name you are definitely familiar with the work. Mr. Apatow has been breathing life into the best comedies of the past decade. He is the wizard of odd, the maestro behind the curtain. I believe Apatow has been the driving factor in revitalizing the comedy genre. Before Judd, R-rated comedies were not big business. The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up changed all of that. They changed people’s idea of what a comedy could accomplish. The films Apatow creates are not defined by silly slapstick or outrageous situations. These comedic elements definitely have a role in comedy but Apatow’s works gave us a new, more touching breed. The reason they have been so successful to me is that the characters feel so real. The characters feel like the friends you always wish you had. The dryness and raunchy nature of Apatow’s comedies are what gives them their human tone. Life is messy and pathetic as hell. Judd’s films show us that the unappealing facets of life are what provide the color. Friendship is also a common theme. Every time I see another one of his works I can’t help but smile at all the silly moments that life is going to bring.

The following are the 5 films I believe best represent Apatow’s special brand of comedy: (more…)

I will be the first to admit that Lord of the Rings anything makes my heart skip with joy. I love every panoramic scenery shot, every one of Merry and Pippin’s shenanigans, every time Gandalf goes into “serious wizard” mode, and every intimate moment between the Fellowship as they journey throughout Middle Earth. I’ve seen all 12 hours of glorious adventure more times than Sam can say “Mr. Frodo”. It is now my honor to answer some questions and reveal some fun facts about LOTR that I’ve learned along the way!
