As many of you know, we here at Banana Scoop try to post four times a day five days a week and then four posts total on the two-day weekend.  That’s nearly 24 posts a week.  We usually don’t take holidays and we’re fairly consistent with how many times we post.  But as many of you must realize this takes time.  “But it’s your job,” some might say.  This is NOT my job.  I’m a chemical engineering student at a demanding top engineering school and writing a blog about pop culture is not considered a smart use of time when there are tests, quizzes, and optional homework that needs to be done.  This blog is my hobby.  My temporary escape from a rather creatively stifling school.  But that’s another story for another time.

I once recorded the time it takes to prepare a week’s worth of material for Banana Scoop.  It may take anywhere from 8 to 10 hours a week.  That’s a lot of time for something you’re neither paid for nor graded for.  I still manage to have somewhat of a social life, have time for my 30 hour a week job, and of course to do other things I enjoy like reading or blowing off some steam playing video games.

I’m dedicating today’s post to how life works for me and Banana Scoop.  While we do have one other contributor here, my inability to pay him forces me to carry about 85-90%+ of the workload of maintaining the aesthetics and punctual aspect of this blog.  I have a very long system that originates from daydreaming into a castle to cramming minutes before my deadline.  Read below on how I organize my life to run the very gratifying website that is Banana Scoop.

As a followup to a post I did a while back, another article has risen concerning the possible banning of the 360 console in the United States. In retaliation to being sued by Microsoft over multiple patents that phone company Motorola should have been paying for, the cellphone provider counter-sued with their own patent complaints, citing multiple patents that Microsoft had breached that are currently in use on their console system. It turns out that back in April, a judge had ruled that Microsoft did indeed infringe upon a few of the patents it was accused of violating. Read more about the case in the source article below and let me know what you think!

Or not. Receiver, created by Wolfire, is an interesting game that was developed in an astonishing seven days. Despite not being gods, the people over at Wolfire know how to create a compelling experience in a very short amount of time. Showcasing permanent death as a feature in the game, it’s not so much the game changing every time you die as you starting a new character on a brand new world. Either way, it looks like an interesting enough game to keep tabs on. I have yet to give it a whirl, so if any of you know anything more about it, let me know! Also, check out the article below for more information.

In a strange twist of artistic creativity, an artist named David (no source on Kotaku) has meshed together the best of both worlds by utilizing the familiar and iconic Adventure Time art style with the characters from the world of Studio Ghibli. It’s a little odd for me to see some of my favorite characters drawn in such a cartoon like fashion, as I grew up watching movies like My Neighbor Totoro and Kiki’s Delivery Service. I’m not one to criticize, especially since I definitely don’t have the ability to draw anything near that well, but the art style just doesn’t really resonate with me. Contrary to popular opinion, I don’t really like Adventure Time, so it figures that I don’t like my favorite fiction characters being transformed into these strange childlike versions of themselves. Anyway, check out the rest of the pictures from the article linked below.

As a followup to one of my earlier posts concerning action figures from the Avengers movie, here is a tiny Black Widow action figure for you to drool over. Noticeably absent from the original cast of action figures, we now see that the figurine was definitely worth the wait. Lifelike to an extent, this collectible definitely belongs with the other celebrity look-a-like Avengers. Check out a gallery of photos from Kotaku in the link below.

So folks, Kotaku caught my eye with a rather interesting article that may or may not be true. But with a title like ‘The Last Great Wii Game’, I couldn’t help but have my interest piqued by this piece. It covers the story of a game titled ‘The Last Story’, which, as the title states, may just be the last great Wii game we’ll see before Nintendo decides to retire their family-friendly console for a more edgy, sleek, touch-screen integrated one. Either way, I hope you have a great time reading this article as it really does capture the atmosphere behind a game like this.

The day has come when the legendary Shigeru Miyamoto, the man who brought us the Legend of Zelda and Mario series, wants to work on an FPS. In a strange turn of events, Miyamoto has stated to others that he wishes to work on a project a little more Doom or Call of Duty oriented, but he lacks the time to do so. I’m not quite sure how the people would react to such a thing, but I’m fairly certain that it would be an interesting game nonetheless. Check it all out in the article below and tell us what you think!

As stated above, a landlord’s 11 year old boy stole over three grand from one of the tenants living in his building in order for him to use the money for in-game gear for multiple online games. The boy’s excuse was that his allowance was not enough to allow him to purchase said gear, but after seeing the tenant in question place money under her bed, he decided that it was okay for him to ‘borrow’ it. Now, I’m not certain how the jurisdiction and law works in China, but I’m fairly certain that this lady won’t be able to get anything back from those companies due to their user agreements and non-negotiable payment options. Hopefully she’ll be able to recoup some of the stolen cash, but it looks unlikely.

So, for those of you gamers out there who enjoy seeing things with a major graphic overhaul, or just enjoy really nice aesthetics to games, have I got news for you. The new Unreal game engine is not only licensed to the people who make the engine this time around. Unreal Engine 4 is licensed to a lot of large major contributors to the video game scene just like BioWare made use of UE3. I’ll let you guys check out the article below for the gritty details, but rest assured the changes are astounding, and I for one cannot wait for it to be implemented in the next generation of amazing games.

M. Night Shyamalan used to be the master of the movie twist.  Everyone knows what happens in the Sixth Sense and I thought Unbreakable was pretty good.  But Complex has compiled 50 of the best twists.  And while I’m sure M. Night Shyamalan has left his mark, that just means there’s 40 more movies out there that are either better or just as good as his old stuff.  There will be no discussion of how he destroyed Avatar: The Last Airbender.  Bah-doy-doy, spoilers ahead, so only visit if you think you’re bold enough to have watched the best movies with spoilers.  I’m not so bold, but I couldn’t pass the opportunity to test the ambitious.

Alright, despite the fact that E3 2012 isn’t really over yet (at least, I don’t think it is), I’m going to go ahead and write this wrap-up article as the main performances and press conferences are already done with. With a star-studded line-up featuring the regulars such as Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo as well as developers EA and Ubisoft, people were expecting an amazing E3. Feel free to read further to see what I thought of this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo. (more…)

My main article following this one will be much more in depth than what you see right now. This is just a short article to get myself into the writing mood and allow my muse to help me get a grasp on things. Anyway, like the article says this will be a short intro to my thoughts and observations about E3 2012. First and foremost, Microsoft. While they had a spectacular opening half, I felt that they kind of dwindled and went too long on the Nike/Sports section. Additionally I think a bigger bang would have been leaving Halo 4 or Gears of War for the ending as opposed to Black Ops 2. Overall Microsoft didn’t wow me in comparison to…say…Ubisoft, Sony or Nintendo. EA and Ubisoft were on point, but I’ll cover that later on in Thursday’s big review. Sony had some amazing exclusives that I definitely can’t wait to get my hands on, and Nintendo brought the same thing they always do. Unfortunately, Nintendo seemed a little lackluster this year as well, with the only thing to catch my eye being Nintendoland and Majora’s Mask, but who doesn’t LOVE Majora’s Mask? Be sure to tune in tomorrow when I give you guys the detailed review and my thoughts about the major press conferences of E3 2012.

Alright, so as we’ve seen so far during Microsoft’s E3 conference, they have a heavy hitting lineup that starts off with a very anticipated sequel, Halo 4. From what we’ve seen there’s some Forerunner technology loose, and apparently a USMC ship going down on some foreign planet that just so happens to have the chief on it. Also, there’s a giant metal ball going around killing things. Moving along, we’ve also seen a brand new Splinter Cell game, in which you bring back Sam in an attempt to bring down a world-wide terrorist cell. Additionally, we saw a trailer for a new Gears of War game titled Judgement and a new Forza game, Horizon, which looks sexy as all heck. that’s about all I’ve got for you game junkies today, so I’ll cover more in Wednesday’s article.

So, in anticipation of Nintendo’s E3 conference, today’s MBO will focus directly on Nintendo’s brand new console, the Wii-U. As we’ve already seen before, it looks to be a miniature tablet. Now, in recently leaked photos of said controller, there were a few changes that were made, most noticeably in the thumbsticks, and how they’re more pronounced in the current iteration of it as opposed to the older prototypes. More than likely this change was to accommodate the heavy gamer archetype of Nintendo’s consumer fan base. Check out the Kotaku article cited below and be sure to get back to us with your thoughts and comments about it.

Alright guys, this is it. This is the big moment of the year that every gamer looks forward to. This is the time when Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo and a slew of other gaming companies announce their plans for the rest of the year. For those of you who don’t know, the Electronic Entertainment Expo, or E3 for short, is the most prestigious and spoiler-packed event of the year for any and all gamers. Hopefully this year we will be able to see what each company has planned for the future, and personally I’m looking forward to a Borderlands 2 spoiler as well as something pertaining to Final Fantasy XIII Versus. Anyway, if you want to keep up with the event like me, stay tuned to Kotaku.

Alrighty, time for another game of the week. This week I’ll be covering a somewhat oldie but definitely a goodie, Super Smash Bros. Brawl. This amazing third installment to an amazing fighting game really took the world by storm (at least those of us who got a Wii), and really brought a lot of things to the table that fans were asking for.

With an amazing roster, cool new items, and a relatively unique single player campaign, SSBB immediately became a must-have game for anyone that owned Nintendo’s latest console. I’ll be covering the ins and outs of the game as a whole, while reminiscing with you lot about how amazing this game is for friends to play around the couch. Hopefully you’ll enjoy this review to the latest game in the Super Smash Bros. series.

So, in this hefty read, the author sums up the list of the things promised during the E3 2011 Nintendo conference. As you can see, there are a lot of things that Nintendo managed to keep. Actually, after a quick scan, I don’t think I found a promise that Nintendo DIDN’T keep. It’s really nice to see a video game giant like Nintendo sticking to their promises and giving us something without the dreaded ‘delay’ press conference. Read up on what exactly was delivered, and gauge for yourself just how professional a company like Nintendo is.

So, in this fancy little infographic I found, you can see that there are a multitude of levels to the geek hierarchy, and though none of them may be the ‘best’ or the ‘coolest’, it’s always interesting to see how people view the sci-fi loving, techno-babble culture that is geek. A lot of the graphics here are misunderstood and rather cliche looks at some forms of geek, with Star Wars fans not always at odds with Star Trek fans or Gadget Geeks ever going camping, but I suppose those are more for giggles than anything else. I found the Internet Geek graphic to be more true to life than anything else on the picture, but that’s only because I see it far too often visiting a site like Reddit or 4Chan. Anyway, I hope you enjoy this rather interesting take on the internet subcultures and how you may or may not fit into the pie chart.

So if you guys haven’t seen it yet, or if you aren’t in the loop as far as technology goes, LG has released a new five inch 1080P, 440ppi display, and it looks gorgeous. Despite not having the most pixel density, this small screen boasts other amazing specs such as wide viewing angles and fast response times. The article continues with a bunch of stuff from the PR section and a lot of other information about the nice screen, so check it out if you get the time. With the display going on sale later on in the year, I don’t think it will be long until we see it on smartphones or other paraphernalia.

So, in a rather strange twist of reality, a hacker was apparently recently asked to break into the e-mail accounts of not only the Call of Duty creator’s e-mails, but most of Infinity Ward in a suit against the company by Activision. The hacker, once denied assistance by Microsoft, went to more shady business dealings to get the job done. The details are still hazy, but apparently Activision must want to win this case something awful if they resorted to hiring a hacker to steal e-mails. Read the full story in the article sourced below and let us know what you think of this entire debacle.
