One of the biggest video game publications will finally come to a halt this December. Nintendo Power will stop publishing their magazines come the end of this year. So comes the end to one of my favorite gaming magazines. Nintendo Power, while not on the scope of other game magazines, still remains one of my favorite to date. Their incredibly interactive fan answer sections (at least, from what I remember when I was younger) were all full of people that were just like me. I remember really being able to connect with it, though it also helped that the magazine always kept me in the loop concerning my favorite upcoming and recently released Nintendo games, complete with early game strategy games in order to help me get that little bit of ‘oomph’ to power myself up or find whatever missing treasure I needed to finally 100% whatever I was playing at the time. It will be missed, much more so than many of the other gaming magazines we still have today in my opinion. Farewell, friend!

Morning Link: Television Shows that Should Be Video Games

Movies adapted into games have largely been written off, and most TV-to-game adaptations have been pretty dismal. But by taking a game and putting it in a style that you wouldn’t expect, the results can be great. You would have thought a Walking Dead game would have emulated similarly themed titles like Dead Rising or Left 4 Dead.
What Comes Next?

So we’ve seen what Nintendo intends to bring to the next generation. The WiiU is comprised of a console and a tablet-like controller that allows you far more immersion into the gaming world than we’ve had originally, but that’s always been Nintendo’s survival tool. They strayed away from the normal controller based gameplay in favor of something motion based, giving the player essentially free reign to a degree on what they did in a game. Slashing the air ended up cutting down an enemy in game, and multiple other actions did other things not to mention the variety of mini games made endlessly fun (I.E. Mario Party). My question concerning that is, “what comes next?”. While we can easily look at Nintendo, who have already spoiled their next gen console for the masses and say, “That was obviously the next step in their evolution.”, is it really all that simple? Sure enough we’re all pretty bias considering we already know what they’re bringing to the party, but I can’t say that I would have said that a few months ago when speculation was still the norm. Prepping For Borderlands 2 and a Media Consolidation

I’ve never been more excited for a game than the upcoming sequel to 2009’s runaway hit Borderlands. Combining RPG and FPS shooter elements to a quirky styled game made an excellent stew of a game. Leveling up and variety of guns made the staying power and the mayhem of fire fights made the fun. Despite owning the game for a couple of months now, I’ve made it a goal to finish the first one by killing Crawmerax the Invincible before the September 18th release date. As we wait though, the developers Gearbox Software has been slowly trickling out information to satiate the rabid fanbase. And it looks like it won’t disappoint. By giving the game a better story, varied environments, and face to the villain, all the main problems seem to be already have fixed. And by adding even more guns, crazier enemies, and new classes, we might be looking at Game of the Year right here. I’ve consolidated a lot of the media Gearbox has released in this post, be sure to check it all out.

Morning Link: Ouya, The Future of Console Gaming
Posted in Video Games, tagged Android, Console gaming, Crowd funding, kickstarter, Ouya, Video game console, Video Games on August 27, 2012| 1 Comment »
Today’s Morning Link(s) is wickedly exciting because it is about one of the coolest sites on the interweb and how it funded one of the coolest gaming projects of the year. The site is Kickstarter and the treasure is the Ouya. If you are familiar with both of these beauties I still encourage you to comment and bond with me in manic excitement. If you are unfamiliar with Kickstarter it is a crowd funding website dedicated to creative projects. Anyone with a creative idea can submit a video and receive funding from the Kickstarter community to make their dream a reality. If you are interested in Kickstarter get your artistic/innovative/favorite pants on and start browsing!
The second and more seductive half of today’s Morning Link is the Ouya. The Ouya is an upcoming video game console due in early 2013 that runs on the open source Android platform, starts at $99, and requires every game to offer some kind of free-to-play option. The Ouya was Kickstarter’s fastest project to reach the one million dollar donated mark and finished at a grand total of $8,596,475. The Ouya represents everything that the console gaming world has been missing; portability, affordability, and ease of game development. I’m going to cut myself off now because when I talk about the Ouya too much my face starts to melt. Please check out the Ouya Kickstarter campaign that made it all possible here and the official site here.

Oh wow does this look REALLY cool. While the video I’ve shown you is just a visualization and a little bit of an overview of this game, I hope that you all will take the time to at least check out their kickstarter campaign to get this show on the road. While I’m not openly advertising this company and kickstarters as a whole put me on edge, I wouldn’t mind just helping them along by linking to it down below. While I most likely won’t be getting the game and playing it for days on end like I have with previous titles, the idea alone sparked enough of an interest in me to at least support it on some level. It looks like an RTS style game in which you can control an entire solar system by building more and more. In contrast to most RTS style games where your maps consist of a single city or barren wasteland, this game will have you on edge trying to compete for multiple bodies in space for resources and control. If that in itself doesn’t interest you in the slightest then at least it’s a really cool video to watch.

Where Do We Draw The Line?

So as many of you have already heard, publishing giant EA has sued infamous game thief Zynga over a blatant copy of their sims series of games. While I’m all for giving the bad guy what’s due to them, I can’t help but wonder of anything can be done at all to stem the idea thieving that has been going on for some time now. I actually wonder if anything would have been done at all had EA not stepped up to the plate and started this lawsuit. Further along in this article I’ll somewhat give a rant about what I feel concerning this entire debacle, and hopefully you all can shed some light as to whether or not this should have happened in the first place. Ever heard the phrase, ‘Do a Barrel Roll’ or ‘Finish Him’? If you’re not familiar with game culture and are interested, than this is the video for you. What we have here is a surprisingly information-filled story about the history of gaming memes. Included, you’ll hear “All Your Base Belong to Us”, “Fail”, etc. It’s surprising how Fail came from gaming culture when everyone, including non-gaming people, now incorporate this into every day life. Check out the video above.
A Video Game Den Every Enthusiast Yearns For

I patrolling some of my favorite online forums and this had a topic dedicated to itself entirely. With 50+ posts within a day, there was sure a good reason the title was, ‘mother of god’. This image is pretty much the ultimate gamer den. Being a 90s child, I can identify with probably 14 out of the 24 consoles here, but some of them just seriously escape me. Some of them even look like different versions of the same game console with slightly different designs. Regardless, this is quite the collection this mystery person has collected and I’m sure one day it’ll be worth tons of mullah…if it isn’t already…
Three Grand Stolen By 11 Year Old For In-Game Gear
Posted in Articles, Video Games, tagged 11-year old, Stolen, Video Games on June 11, 2012| Leave a Comment »
As stated above, a landlord’s 11 year old boy stole over three grand from one of the tenants living in his building in order for him to use the money for in-game gear for multiple online games. The boy’s excuse was that his allowance was not enough to allow him to purchase said gear, but after seeing the tenant in question place money under her bed, he decided that it was okay for him to ‘borrow’ it. Now, I’m not certain how the jurisdiction and law works in China, but I’m fairly certain that this lady won’t be able to get anything back from those companies due to their user agreements and non-negotiable payment options. Hopefully she’ll be able to recoup some of the stolen cash, but it looks unlikely.

GameStop Mobile?

Well, it’s finally happened folks. GameStop has jumped the shark. According to an article on Engadget, GameStop intends to become a telecommunications provider, offering contract and pre-paid deals that work through AT&T (oh boy…). As long as your hardware works on AT&T, apparently you can sign up with GameStop for anywhere from a $5 pre-paid plan to a $55 contract, with unlimited voice and text as well as a stunning 500MB of data (yes…stunning…). Wait…only 500MB of data? Well, I won’t cross my fingers, let alone stop by any AT&T store any time soon. Unfortunately for me (or fortunately. depending on perspective), I am on Verizon and have been enjoying it thoroughly (as in, I love playing app based games on the go). If anyone has anything else to add, please let us know in the comments below. Thanks!
Attack of the Show Says Goodbye to Kevin Pereira

After ten years, the television station known as G4, formerly known as Tech T.V, will be saying goodbye to long time Attack of the Show host and Kevin ‘Dude Manrod’ Pereira. To honor the likable and witty show host, Attack of the Show will be airing clips from his history with the station until the 31st, when he is slated to leave the show (and quite possibly the network) for good. The second host of the show to leave after gamer pin-up gal Olivia Munn, this leaves questions as to how the show will function without its headliner. As a gamer, I will still avidly support G4 TV and its endeavors (hoping that they remove the cops, cheaters, and campus PD that are so notoriously clogging up my precious viewing time). Anyway, I’ll definitely miss Kevin on the show, but I also look forward to seeing who they get to fill those huge shoes. Candace Bailey and Sara Underwood are amazing, hot, and quirky personalities, but the gaming community is still a male-centered area, and needs a bit more testosterone to relate to (not being offensive, just saying that us guys need someone to look up to is all).

Morning Banana Oatmeal: Valve vs. EA
Posted in Articles, Video Games, tagged ea, origins, valve, Video Games on May 7, 2012| Leave a Comment »
So as many of you have already noticed, EA (Electronic Arts) have released their own steam-like application known as Origin, which hosts a lot of the major EA titles, many of which were pulled from steam before the release of the program. Since then…well…it’s received more than its fair share of criticism ranging from poor design to poor customer service. The interview with Gabe Newell, head of Valve and subsequently, Steam, can clue us in to how he views his ‘competition’. At this point this article could be nothing more than speculation, but I found it to be an interesting enough read.
Video Games Can’t Afford to Cost This Much

In this rather enlightening article, we discover why it is that EA and Activision (among other companies) have decided that they will churn out half-assed games with downloadable content as an already pre-established medium. We have seen the decline in quality for the past decade, with game rising in price by what appears to be a meager 10$ at face value. However, this in turn has had a profound effect on the way gamers view their games nowadays. I cannot begin to sum up why games are heading in the wrong direction with ‘planned DLC’ for games that have yet to launch, so I’ll leave it to WIRED journalist Chris Kohler to lay down the facts and explain what’s wrong with the industry today.
Morning Banana Oatmeal: 6 Awful Jobs That Must Exist in Video Games
Posted in Articles, Video Games, tagged Link, Mario, Sonic, Video Games on April 23, 2012| Leave a Comment »
When we play through our various collections of video games, saving the world or racing against friends, we usually do it without thinking about what goes on behind the scenes. Who fixes Mario’s kart, or anyone’s kart for that matter, when they crash into the water or get hit off the course by a shell or other forms of trickery and sometimes douchebaggery (here’s to you, Blue Shell, bane of my existence). What about Link’s neighbors, always being woken up by his terrifying battle screams (NYA! HYA! HAAAAAAA!) in the middle of the night with no explanations, and do those item chest noises always have to be so loud? (DA NA NA NAAAAAAA!). After reading through this article, I assure you that you may have a different take on your favorite video game characters and how they treat those around them. To be fair, most of them already treated everyone else around them like a sack of dung.
Game of the Week: League of Legends

Well folks, it’s that time of the week again. Time for us to once again to dust off our swords and shields, to restring our bows and polish our magic gems, to rise up against the forces of evil or combat the forces of good depending on your alignment. Time for us to clash with other players from all around to world in a test of might, magic, and patience. That’s right, you’ve guessed it, this week’s game of the week is League of Legends, a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena, or MOBA, style game, that has gained considerable and deserved praise for the way it revolutionized…or defined a genre of gaming. Now, that last statement might get me into a heated debate about the first MOBA game of all time. Well I do agree that DotA and HoN are also games of this genre, you’d be hard pressed to find anywhere near the level and sheer size of acclaim this game has gotten in comparison to the others. Take a break, sit down, relax for a while. While you’re not out there grinding for the next level or trying to destroy some nubs and get some achievements or other load like that, take some time out of your day to get a good couple of laughs out of the geeky comic strips from the guys at Penny Arcade. Loaded with tons of inside jokes and great humor, Tycho and Gabe deliver endless amounts of entertainment from comics to coverage of major gaming events. One that stands out in particular is the latest coverage of PAX 2012, despite them being there as artists. If you’re ever feeling down and want a little pick-me-up to feel better about yourself (whether it concern your ELO tanking or being demoted a league in SC2, they’ll understand), take a breather and cycle through some of their strips and hopefully you’ll feel a little less grey.

Darksiders II Customization Elements

Alright, so if you’re hyped up for Vigil Studios’ sequel to bestseller Darksiders, you’re in for what appears to be an incredible treat. Not only have the devs allowed you to wield the power of death himself, but they’ve also allowed you to customize how death kills all the things. With branching skill trees and a slew of weapons with which to beat the evil things that go bump in the night senseless, Kotaku’s latest misleading title cues us in to the level of diversity (which I highly doubt there can be much, but I can be wrong) in which one can customize their character in this GoW-esque hack and slash. Now I for one may not be persuaded to pick it up on launch day as of right now, but with the right shiny things and the promise of endless hours of gameplay I may just change my mind. Unfortunately, with games such as this I find myself skeptical of just how much ‘customization’ one can really do with a character. In the end there are always skills that outshine others and will undoubtedly be maxed out in terms of usability. I won’t say too much more, however, as things could change. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see, won’t we?
