Well folks, it’s that time of the week again. Time for us to once again to dust off our swords and shields, to restring our bows and polish our magic gems, to rise up against the forces of evil or combat the forces of good depending on your alignment. Time for us to clash with other players from all around to world in a test of might, magic, and patience. That’s right, you’ve guessed it, this week’s game of the week is League of Legends, a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena, or MOBA, style game, that has gained considerable and deserved praise for the way it revolutionized…or defined a genre of gaming. Now, that last statement might get me into a heated debate about the first MOBA game of all time. Well I do agree that DotA and HoN are also games of this genre, you’d be hard pressed to find anywhere near the level and sheer size of acclaim this game has gotten in comparison to the others.
For those of you who aren’t in the know, a MOBA is a style of game in which two teams of players each pick a character and do battle. There are certain nuances and other particular details that are thrown into the mix such as item builds, creeps, and to a lesser degree, towers, but those will all be covered later on. For now, let’s focus on the story of League of Legends, or more affectionately referred to as LoL by those summoners who play it.
League of Legends takes place on a continent (or some other similar landmass) known as Valoran, with two conflicting military ideologies from the shining, brilliant kingdom known as Demacia, and the dark, sinister kingdom called Noxus. There are little factions thrown into the mix such as the icy kingdom of Freljord, where dwell only the most weather hardened, frost-bitten warriors, and Bandle City, where a race of small raccoon, rabbit, mouse creatures called Yordles reside. With the two biggest powers vying for the top spot, a guild was created to both act as an intermediary and a judge when the force of two powerful magic forces clashed. This institution was called the League of Legends. This is where almost all of the game’s now over 90 different playable characters are headed to for reasons known only to them. These ‘champions’ do battle at the behest and control of a ‘summoner’ on battlefields where magic cannot harm other residents.
As of now there are three battlefields, otherwise known as ‘Fields of Justice’, which are the maps around which the game is played. First and foremost is the oldest and most played map, known as Summoner’s Rift. This map features two bases on the bottom left and top right corners of the map with a river splitting the map diagonally in half from the top left to bottom right. This map is meant for 5v5 combat. The second, and far lesser played map is called Twisted Treeline, and features two bases on the left and right with a forest between the two. This map is meant for 3v3 combat. Lastly, there is the Crystal Scar, a large circle with the two bases on the bottom left and bottom right. This map features a 5v5 king of the hill game type in which the opposing teams try to capture points and take down the other team’s base by keeping said points.
