MAKO FINAL

I drew Mako Mori from Pacific Rim!  I absolutely adored this movie and adored Rinko Kikuchi’s portrayal of the lovable Mako Mori.

I uploaded a new video yesterday of me inking and coloring a new image.  I uploaded a video similar to this idea a couple of days ago, as well as the finished project that I’ve re-added below.  The inking and coloring of this project took approximately an hour and I was able to condense it to about 9 minutes.  I might continue to decreasing the time in each of these so they’re more watchable.

In any case, if anyone is interested, I’m using Adobe Illustrator CS6.  I’m more than free to answer any technical questions as well!

The unexpected maintenance update definitely warrants something new or crazy here at Banana Scoop.  As a matter of fact, it’s a little bit of both.  As bloggers I’d imagine each and everyone one of you who is reading this [all 4 of you, hi Mom and Dad], might understand the emotional and invigorating feeling you might get when you try to overhaul your blog for the better.  In the past, Banana Scoop made a humungous jump when I first tried to include 15 – 18 posts a week on a regimented schedule and then another big jump when we tried to make that 20-24 posts a week.  Next thing I knew, I had quadrupled the amount of writers on the site [4 x 1 = 4] and we were pumping out so much content weekly.  With so many humungous changes in the past and each as [semi] life changing as the last, we now make another big change, hopefully for the better of the future.   Today’s post is focused on the main point of those changes..And to those I still have on a leash at this point: interwebz points for you.

We’re Reducing Post Frequency by over 80%

Big one.  The number of scheduled posts a week was 24.  Reducing that by 80% brings you to about five posts.  Five posts a week.  That’s a big change and I don’t think we’ve had that since towards the beginning of this blog.  That’s a big change up from 24 and I think it will bring us in the right direction.  The 20 or so posts we’re cutting out are the pictures, videos, and links-related posts that used to litter our site.  Those short posts were essentially the praises of other persons on the internet for their good work and while we liked to praise them for their dedication to pop culture, their promotion made me feel as though Banana Scoop didn’t provide enough of it’s own good work.  So by reducing the numerous posts of others, we’re only doing our original 1000+ word articles.

Banana Scoop has a new contributor!  Her name is Rachel and she’ll be posting several times a month.  Not only does she have a lot of opinions on movies, books, video games, she’s also got something Banana Scoop hasn’t had yet: a female perspective on things.  Read more about her joining in the Weekly Newsletter posted later today!

Rachel chose to have a coffee mug as her avatar.  I initially went with a more mature looking coffee cup, but she recommended a softer side, so I added some more innocent features to her.  I had a lot of fun playing with the spilt coffee above, despite if it’s a little bit superfluous   Regardless, I hope she likes her new avatar!

The Avatar revamps continue.  While Bruce just got an upgrade in animal species, SoGoCJE requested a complete revamp.  From hooded gamer to robot, I rather liked this change.  Primarily because he allowed me to try some really cool things with glowing lights.  I had a lot of fun drawing this one.  Below is a picture of an older version of him.

User Avatars continue their revamp with Bruce losing his lovable, cartoonish feel for a fierce and hardcore update.  I’ve always been ambiguous if he was an ape or a gorilla and I decided to go with the more fierce one.  Bruce loves movies, television, and video games, but his Macbook Pro is probably his most prized possession   Like me, he finds happiness in the simple things like fruits, Adobe Software, and Mac OS.

SoGoCJE is getting a revamp as well, look forward to it next week.  See Bruce’s old look below.

I’m both ecstatic and dreading this week.  School starts.  I think it’s more exciting because the weight of school work hasn’t burdened on me yet.  I know I’ll eat those words later this semester when my classes start bearing down on me.  Georgia Tech has a knack for doing that to people.  Other than that, nothing much else is new on Banana Scoop here.  Ben starts his rotation on Wednesday this week, minor maintenances updates, etc.  Read below for the full Scoop.

School Begins this Week

So school starts this week.  As I mentioned above, it’s a mixed feeling.  Mostly good, but I know what I’m in for.  Long nights, impossible tests, foreign instructors, and no mercy.  So is the life of an engineer in training.  As odd as it sounds, I feel as though Banana Scoop will surge at some point because I use this blog as an outlet for the stress.  But as I’ve been warning for the past couple of weeks, all it means is that prepare yourself for frequent breaks throughout the semester.

Ben Starts His Article This Week

We announced Ben’s new status as a writer and we’re all very excited to see what he has to contribute.  His weekly publishings will be on Wednesdays at 11:00 EST.

Maintenance Updates

The Maintenance updates widgit hasn’t been updated in a while and I mean to fix that sometime this week to better reflect what’s going on.

Weekly Preview

  • Mockingjay Review
  • Fall TV Preview
  • Bill Hader is Hilarious
  • Joseph Gordon Levitt is Awesome

This is my second shot at a someone from my Black Circus Series, Cameron.  She’s had a wardrobe change as well as a hair cut.  Drawing women [or regular humans for that manner] is not my forte.  I’ve had much better luck at werewolves and creepy clowns. Be sure to visit my deviant art page for more!  Also see the original Cameron below.

Sadly, this is the last Universidaze comic I’ll publish in a long time.  As school looms closer and closer, I know I need to give up some of the responsibilities I’ve given myself when it comes to this blog.  And after evaluating some of the cost/profit aspects of this blog, Universidaze simply takes too much time for it to be worth it.  If I were a free lance artist who could dedicate his one post a week to Universidaze, it would be doable.  But balancing the 2-4 hour drawing process with 24 other articles a week is simply going to make this blog bleed.

The adventures of Chad and Miles seem to be over for now.  It’s such a shame, considering I’ve grown very fond of the two of them and I feel as though I could’ve done so much more.  The Universidaze tab will remain here for all those who wish to go back and read some of the older comics.  I plan on playing around with the hyperlinks and making the page much nicer as a final send off.  But who knows, maybe they’ll survive the crash.  Maybe they’ll make a comeback.  We can only wish and dream.

The beautiful product of Adobe Illustrator.  This project took about 8 hours.  When  I was working with only Photoshop, I never did anything this distinct, clean, or clear as this.  Illustrator just takes things to a whole new level.  Shadows are easier, lines are clearer, and organizing is all around better.  I’m very excited if this is my first real work with Illustrator, I can only get better right?  I’ll keep you all posted as I continue to draw art like this.

Heavy Influence from Monster Madness.
