As I finish up the Great Gatsby in preparations for Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation starring the awesome Leonardo DeCaprio, there are a couple of other books I want to start and finish for potential movies or general interest. I’m not a humungous reader because I honestly don’t have the time, but if the story is good enough, I’ll easily forsake school work to finish it up, like for what I did for the Millennium Trilogy. Anyways, here’s the 5 books I have so far queued for 2012.
The Hunger Games
This is all people are talking about. The premise is interesting enough and the trailer provides further evidence of that. A group of teenagers that are forced to fight each other and the curvy Jennifer Lawrence as someone named Katniss. That’s more than enough for me. No but seriously, in all the sequels, prequels and other things to be released, The Hunger Games is the thing I have the least knowledge about. And anything that’s a big deal to the entertainment world is definitely worth taking a look at in my opinion.
Grimms Tales
By Grimms tales, I mean all of them. If you’re wondering what they are, they’re the stories like Rapunzel, Princess and the Frog, etc. After a quick wiki search, apparently there are over 250 stories that are responsible for a lot of the stuff that Hollywood has thrown at us. Disney in particular is responsible for a lot of the soft and cute adaptations filled with musicals and happy endings. But I have heard over and over again that all of the source material to happy-go-lucky tales with talking animals are actually much darker. And I’ll gladly take a darker version of any material.
Percy Jackson
Say what you will about the mess of a movie that came out a while ago, I actually liked it. Mainly because it played with Greek Mythology and I’m a sucker for clever adaptations of it. We’re not talking Immortals, Clash of the Titans, 300 knock offs, but more clever uses that come from a fairly beloved young adult novel series. As for the Lightning Thief adaptation, I was pleasantly surprised with how star studded it was: Steve Coogan as Hades, Uma Thurman as Medusa, Sean Bean as Zeus, the list goes on and on. I hear they’re making a sequel to the Lightning Thief and if these characters return and if the story is as awesome as I keep hearing it is, we have a potential winner on our hands.
House of Leaves
No, I don’t believe this book will become a movie, but apparently it’s trippy as hell as well as extremely stylish. I’m always open to breaking down standard barriers and I hear this book does so on all four cylinders.
The Devil in the White City
All I heard about this book was that it was about a serial killer that gets away a lot. If it wasn’t enough, I heard Leonardo DeCaprio is in talks to be that serial killer. And after watching Aviator, I’ll gladly watch DeCaprio go ape shit and murder some people.
To my fellow readers, what books do you recommend. My interests mainly include fiction [I know, real broad], philosophy, and I’m really in love with the Millennium Trilogy. So take what you can from that and find me another series to get hooked on.
The Percy Jackson series has got to be one of the best young adult series there is. I blogged about how much I loved the series and its author a few weeks ago @ http://leeevogue.wordpress.com/2012/01/15/oh-my-gods/. I mentioned the sequel to the series that I’m sure you’ll love too after you’ve finished PJ.
I’ve only read “The Devil in the White City” on your list, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I hope you do to.
