Since starting my comic book collection nearly two years ago, I’ve been slowly building to this respectable size.  Comic books can be a very personalized [and expensive] hobby, allowing individual readers to select and choose which stories to read in a pool of nearly infinite stories.  In many ways, I like to think a comic book reader can be deeply characterized by their choices in their favorite comic books.  After buying a range of comics from Batman to Fables to Y: The Last Man, I’ve learned that different stories are tailored to different peoples or even different moods.  Violence lovers will enjoy Kick-Ass and Wanted, love story romantics will adore Saga, and EVERYONE will enjoy Batman stories.

Anyways, today’s post marks the beginning of summer’s make up posts for the first quarter of the year lacking updates and content.  In today’s post, I share with you all my comic book collection as well as some things I’ve learned about being in the addictive comic book purchasing business.  As usual, feel free to drop me recommendations and let me know what you guys think!

Lying Cat from Saga

lying cat leg fix

Saga is currently one of my favorite comic books out there.  Due to a lack of super original wallpapers for it, I decided to take it upon myself to draw one.  I chose Lying Cat because she’s definitely one of my favorite characters from it so far.  But truth be told I like all of them.  Anyways, just wanted to share with you guys something I did so you knew I wasn’t completely gone.

Edit: This was a trace.  I’m not THAT skilled.

PAGE 6 PS

A couple of notes with this page

  • I’m experimenting with different shading now and all around a different approach to the admittingly dull page 5.
  • I’m starting to get faster and faster, seeing as how I’ve increased the number of panels while still being able to get this page done in time.  There is still a lot of experiment with, though I think I’m headed in a good direction!
  • I don’t think color is quite achievable yet, although I’m getting faster, I really want to nail basic drawing and repeated poses before I start adventuring into coloring and shading.
  • Let me know what you think!

wonderwoman guns

My first venture into DC comics was through some of the classics: The Killing Joke, The Long Halloween, The Dark Knight Returns, and Knightfall.  Sooner or later, I continued to pick up other Batman titles like Hush, Death in the Family, and Arkham Asylum.  I picked up everything that was considered Batman essential stories and sat proud of my collection of DC titles.  I continued to pick up a few DC imprints like Vertigo comics such as Fables and Y: The Last Man, further cementing my status as a DC fanboy.

What I hadn’t considered in the past was exploring other main DC titles.  For a while I was perfectly content with my collection.  Then I stumbled upon a fan webcomic created by Yale Stewart known as JL8.  This web comic series, based on the Justice League as if they were eight year old children, really compelled me to explore some of the other DC characters.  As a result I purchased The New 52 Justice League, happily reveling in the adult version of JL8.  But as I read Justice League, I slowly became interested in the individual members of the Justice League.  After some research, I’ve found that although Superman is one of the most popular superheroes in the DC universe, his beginning New 52 wasn’t as highly acclaimed as some of his co-League members.  Two heroes that have gotten a lot of acclaim were Wonder Woman and surprisingly Aquaman.  So I picked up whatever current volumes existed for these two super heroes.  I quickly learned that DC isn’t only ‘just Batman’.

The volumes covered in this article include:

  • Aquaman Vol. 1: The Trench, written by Geoff Johns & illustrated  by Ivan Reiss
  • Aquaman Vol. 2: The Others, written by Geoff Johns & illustrated by Ivan Reiss
  • Wonder Woman Vol. 1: Blood, written by Brian Azzarello & illustrated by Cliff Chiang

Cassidy

2013-12-30 15:27

Cassidy is a character from the Black Carnival series.

Cassidy is a mechanic and ride designer.  She is a part time head of Atlasland, the amusement park in the Black Carnival.   Atlasland is divided into two sections, rides and games.  Cassidy is in charge of the rides section, while her twin sister Cameron is in charge of the games section.  The two have an ‘unrivaled rivalry’ that nearly tore down Atlasland as a whole.  On the dying wish of Atlasland’s previous head, Atlas, he wished the two sisters could get along and make Atlasland the section with the most traffic.  The two sisters compromised and now take turns each year being a singular head throughout the year.  Their rivalry has forced them to create a better amusement park and has only done Atlasland good.  Cassidy has always had the engineering mind, able to bring Cameron’s wondrous and creative ideas to life.

Though the two loathe the other, they both realize how much they need each other in memoriam of their former boss Atlas.

The Black Carnival Page 1: The Devil’s Breath

I’ve come a long way from art profiles, and seeing something I’m very passionate come to life like this is fairly incredible.  The start has been bumpy and I know the art isn’t as driving as some of my previous stuff but as I keep doing these, I know I’m getting faster and more efficient.  Being faster and efficient means there is time to try different techniques to improve quality.

In terms of writing and progress, I’m hoping to maintain the weekly schedule.  I aleady have rough sketches of the next two pages, and I have to ink, color, shade, and add text to them.  I’ve also  got at least the next 12 or so pages somewhat scripted out.  In terms of the big story, I have most of that on paper at least, so I’m in no shortage of material, but time constraints may occur.  Please bear with me if hiatuses occur, I’ll do my best to share my story.

Anyways, enjoy the story!

dark knight returns 1

Did you ever want to know what would happen to Batman when he would inevitably become aged?  In Frank Miller’s non-canonical but still incredibly relevant, “The Dark Knight Returns”,  follows Batman in his golden years, 10 years after retirement.  As Gotham is still in the dark shadows, a new generation of criminals who do not know fear try to take over Gotham.  Only so long can the Dark Knight sit idly as he watches the city he gave half of his life to burns.  But he isn’t the only one watching Gotham…When he inevitably comes back, an old foe’s spark is reignited to return as well.

What the what?

For those who don’t know, I made a statement for which I closed this blog after nearly 2 years of updating and sharing with you all my thoughts and opinions on movies, tv, and videogames.  I had essentially left this blog to start a new site Fig-tv.com.  The site is fully functional and features art  and videos created by me.  I’ve ultimately decided that throwing away both the audience I’ve created as well as WordPress’s amazing network abilities would be such a waste.

So I’ve decided to maintain Banana Scoop as a means to updating new images and videos I’ve added to my site.  I’m doing this primarily as a hope to both entertain an audience as well as simultaneously bring some traffic to Fig-tv.com.

I’m very excited in coming back to WordPress after all these weeks and I can’t wait to reconnect with everyone else from the old days.

Expect some updates in the time to come!

-Patrick

I’m really starting to like these Maintenance updates primarily because I don’t get to write much creative writing anymore because between school and writing about Youtube videos I found, there isn’t much room for creative flair.  But it turns out I can dish out some personality through these updates.  So instead of the usual straightforward talk as seen in the eighty word descriptions that usually circulate this site, there’s a little bit of sarcasm and wit.  I’m sure as I keep doing these, they’ll get more and more outrageous.  But enough about that, let’s get to the exciting news.

Maintenance Update on a Sunday?  Where’s my Weekly Preview?

I’ve decided to roll a Maintenance update every week by combining it with the Weekly Preview.  So on Sundays, you’ll have an update with everything we’re doing here at Banana Scoop as well as a a look at what we’re cooking up this week.  Granted, the combination of the two means the both will lose some content than they usually would have alone [shorter updates and smaller previews], but combined, I think we’re killing two birds with one stone.  And besides, that just means I can write Tuesday articles again!

I’ve been learning a lot in the past 2 days.  What we have above is a sleak combination of Illustrator and Photoshop.  It’s still in the testing phase, so this comic is pretty half assed in terms of professionalism [like Chad said].  But still, I’m getting used to it and I can’t wait to reveal to you guys what I’ve been working on for my Sunday Sketch….It’s definitely awesome.  In the meantime, read more Universidaze here!

Cracked has come up with another list of awesome points.  This time around, it’s common comic cliches that occur on all comic covers.  It has something to do with how the artists like portraying heroes.  And apparently there’s a rule book for thing like, holding someone dead in your arms and screaming at the sky, or trying to fit in as many guns as possible.  Or it’s pure coincidence that most comic books do this.  It’s very much like the 3 Point Landing  I posted about earlier.

As I finished up drawing Catwoman, I got the idea in my head to kinda go through my process of drawing with you guys. It will be very similar to the walk through of how I maintain my blog. Overall it’s a very interesting concept and I’ve learned A LOT in my journey as an amateur artist. Let me remind everyone: I am not an art major. Almost the exact actually, an engineer. So I have no real knowledge of how this is supposed to be done. The method I use is a rudimentary method of drawing some very amateur sketches. As I get more ambitious, I learn new things and methods that certainly make things easier as I apply them to whatever I draw. My most recent and ambitious project as of late is this Catwoman sketch which is still a work in progress. But I decided to take a break and kinda take you step by step with what I do.

List of Materials:

  • Graphics tablet and pen
  • Adobe Photoshop
  • Internet
  • Imagination

Read below for my step by step process. The main idea of this blog is simple: create a layer for everything. You’ll see why below. Please comment if you have any questions or critiques to make things easier! I don’t intend this post to be a guide. There are much better guides out there, it’s more of a documentation of my experiences. I’ll try and explain my steps with helpful screen caps to keep things clear. If you however want more details on this, I can certainly answer any questions you might have for me in the comment section below. I check this blog often so I’ll likely respond to your comments fairly quickly!

The changes keep coming here at Banana Scoop.  I’m trying to stay on top of things more than ever now a days.  It seems like we’re gathering much of the strength we haven’t had in a while, and I’m hoping that’s a good thing.  By no means is that a reason to stop.  I’m using the momentum we’re gaining as a fuel.  I’m finding all my old contacts of blog circles and updating my information to get the Scoop out there as much as possible.  Besides these updates,  there are a couple of announcements I’d like to mention.  Read below for some of the highlights and the pertaining details.

To my many new followers, the weekend comics are when I compound 24 hilarious images I’ve found on the internet.  These are not movie/tv related, but knowing a little bit of pop culture won’t hurt you.  As I’ve experienced before, not all humor appeals to all human beings, so please be prepared for racial, gender, and inappropriate jokes.  Otherwise, loosen up and put a smile on.
