A month or so ago, I reviewed Captain America: The First Avenger and labeled it as a decent superhero flick that ultimately broke no new ground in the genre and then proceeded to give it 2/5 Stars.  So after watching Green Lantern, I want to do either one of two things: Raise The Cap’s score or give this one an even more dismal rating.  This is a result of me realizing that I might have realized that Marvel is doing their superhero franchise more credit than I give out because with Green Lantern I witnessed just how bad you could make a superhero movie.  With more green screen then actual green in a movie about green aliens, Green Lantern embarrasses itself with weak writing, a rushed plot, and a hero that just might be trying a little too hard.

It’s just a week for movie reviews isn’t it?  There was a lot of talk from Michael Bay about his follow-up to his multimillion dollar Transformers franchise.  There was talk about how even he himself thought the second one was absolutely horrible – all ranging from the acting to the story.  He claimed he would fix a lot of these mistakes in his third and final chapter of the Transformers series, including the incomprehensible story and the fact that too many people kept dying and coming back to life.  Despite these atrocious elements that made watching the second one unbearable, it still provided itself as a means to fill the destruction and sci-fi chaos that my inner 10 year old occasionally required.  I figured Dark of the Moon would be similar.  So even though I knew itwas going to be a trip from hell, I watched it anyways.

I’m not exactly in the demographic this movie is aimed at. as I’m still 19 and kinda far from having a boss that I’d like to kill, but that doesn’t make this movie any less relatable.  Horrible Bosses does a good job in finding likable protagonists and villains to entertain those who don’t have bosses they want to kill.  The story itself isn’t too original or great and not all the jokes soar, but the cast is what really shines here.  It’s very clear that the cast has fun filming most of the movie and it shows in their dialogue.  Whether it be Colin Farrell’s suprisingly comedic chops, Jennifer Aniston’s delightful naughtiness, or Charlie Day screaming, Horrible Bosses is a character driven movie that’s likely worth your while.

I’ve never known Ryan Gosling to be an action star.  I’ve affiliated him with movies like Crazy, Stupid, Love, The Notebook, Lars and the Real Girl, and Blue Valentine – a very talented actor who should stick with dramas.  So when I saw him in this movie with a premise very similar to Transporter, I was confused if whether or not he was simply getting a paycheck or if he found something special in the script he read.  After sitting through it, I found out which one of those were true.  And it turns out Ryan Gosling doesn’t need and likely never will require a ‘paycheck’ because Drive turns out to be one the best films of the year, and you’ll be seeing Gosling again and again after his mesmerizing performance.  SPOILERS.

Hollywood has described this as summer’s biggest sleeper hit.  R rated comedies don’t normally do well compared to their competition due to their fairly closely targeted audience, but good word of mouth has recently allowed R rated comedies like The 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up, and the Hangover to do well.  The thing that sets Bridesmaid’s  apart from its fellow R rated box office hits lies in its leads.  The all female cast, which normally would’ve targeted only female audiences, was able to set itself apart from ‘chick flick’ status to appeal to a broader demographic, something not commonly seen.  With clever writing, chemistry between it’s leads, and a cast of outrageous supporting characters, it’s these aspects of this movie that saves itself from falling to formula and instead becoming potentially summer’s best comedy.

Star power and whoever is in the director’s seat are usually good indication of whether or not a film is going to be good or not.  When I first watched this trailer, I saw James Franco, Natalie Portman, and Danny McBride.  When I saw the guy who directed Pineapple Express was directing this, I was even more excited.  Then Rotten Tomatoes came out with it’s consensus and I was deeply saddened by its poor review.  [I only use rottentomatoes to tell me which movies I should spend money at a theater, not to judge whether or not a movie is good or not, see my in-depth analysis of rottentomatoes here]  If a movie does poor on rottentomatoes, I’ll usually wait till DVD to watch it.  And so that is the story of how I wasted two hours of my life watching this pooty patooty of a movie.

Captain America: The Last Avenger.   This marks the last installment before the full length feature including Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, Hawk Eye, Nick Fury and Black Widow all played by Hollywood’sA-Listers.  Whew, that’s a lot of superheroes.  Anyways, this feature is the story of Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, whose power is…well, being American.  That doesn’t sound too convincing as an entertaining superhero movie.  Wait.  Maybe this is like one of those superhero movies where it’s more realistic and the hero is believable and Red Skull, the villain, is a menacing grounded mastermind whose ‘Red Skull’ is a metaphor.  Oh wait, you’re telling me there are blue lasers, powers of the Gods, and a questionable German Hugo Weaving in a Red Skull…Uhhhh.

I am not very familiar with this franchise, nor do I have any loyalty to it.  The most I’ve seen of Apes is the Tim Burton film with Marky Mark and I wasn’t too impressed with that.  And upon hearing the tongue twister prequel of a title, I wasn’t very interested in this installment either.  I was given the opportunity to watch any movie and from good word of mouth I chose this one.  Few movies can tickle my fancy by giving me odd protagonists to root for.  And for one hour and forty minutes I found myself rooting for CGI ‘Monkeys’.  And I honestly enjoyed every minute of it.

These days, Christopher Nolan is a household name.  Or at least he’s known as ‘guy who did Inception and Batman’.  He doesn’t have too many credits to his name, but the sheer genius of everything he’s involved in speaks volume about his careful choice in material and his ability to deliver.  I personally have seen six out of the seven movie’s he’s released under the name director.  What’s also incredible is the fact he’s had a hand in writing most of these films too.  I’ve always believed a director should be involved in the writing process, so that the visualization can match the execution.  So I’ve ranked the six Christopher Nolan movies I’ve seen.  Comparison of these movies against each other is like comparing the best athlete when you’re picking from the Miami Heat or the best alcohol for a good night.  You’re ranking system can be heavily affected the mere mood you’re in.  Being number 6 on a Christopher Nolan film is still like being 20 on the best movies of all time list.  Hit the jump to check out number one.  Potential spoilers below.

Okay, I know I’m a couple of weeks late.  I actually saw this movie a week after it came out, but I’m still oozing from its excellence that I still have the need put my thoughts into words.  After a jumble of bad publicity photos and promotion, including a bad first image and a questionable first trailer, the movie still impressed.  Anchored heavily towards character development, an idea absent in ‘Last Stand’ and ‘Origins: Wolverine’, this film succeeds in reviving the interesting world of X-Men.  Any cheesiness and awkward moments observed are balanced out with strong performances by James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender to make First Class a welcome edition to the X-Men franchise.
