A Cartoon Intellects of the Round Table

Adam Withers got a commission [got paid to visualize an idea] to draw this collection of cartoon intellects.  When I originally saw this image, I could only identify about half, Velma, Dexter, Edd, and Nigel Uno.  When I visited his deviantart page, I soon realized that Jimmy Neutron is stud in the leather biker jacket.  The other two are apparently from TV shows called Daria and Johnny Test which I think we’re a little after my time.  Regardless, this is a genius collection of  cartoon intellects that with they’re combined knowledge, they could create world peace…or the means to destroy it.

Little did you internet people know, today is my birthday.  And here I am continually writing stuff for you on a day where I should be relaxing and not worrying about stuff.  Sheesh, the things I do for you.  Nah, I’m just kidding.  I love this and writing for you guys is my vacation from the Hell hole of a school that I attend [JK, it’s not THAT bad].  So that wraps up today.  I’m 20 years old now.  Goddammit.  I’m old.  It felt like yesterday when I watched this television show and this movie.  But low and behold these are from the goddammed 90s!!  Sweet mama pajama.  Okay, enough with me facing my own mortality.  Someone get me a shot of something strong.

Frank and Fiona Scene

Recently, I’ve been crushing so much television. Caught up with FX’s Archer and Justified. Looking into Life’s Too Short and Extras. Then there’s The Walking Dead that’s returned [one more episode till I decide my verdict on whether this show is still worth watching]. Awake and Game of Thrones come mid spring. And then a dry summer just gets us amped for Fall television. I’d say it’s almost a one year anniversity before I started taking television seriously. I remember a long time ago, my friends saying, ‘do you watch Parks and Recreation?’ ‘did you see last night’s Office?’ I was always left out of these conversations, trying to sway them to talk about movies for something I could possibly geek out about. Around this time last year, I finally started digging into television. Soon enough I had NBC’s Community, Parks and Recreation, and the Office entire series under my belt. Then Friends. Then suddenly I started craving more and more, catching up on Dexter, Firefly and more until the point where I’ve devoured everything from Arrested Development to more obscure TV shows like Better Off Ted. Now I find myself watching tons more hours of television than movies. I honestly say the ratio hours spent looking at a screen for television to movies is about 3:1. That’s maybe 3 hours of tv for one hour of movies. Translate a two hour movie, that means I watch 7 hours of television for 2 hours of movies. 7 hours of television either translates to 20 30-minute block, or 10 one-hour blocks.

The Community Board Game: The Quest for Priority Registration

USDIRECT.com created this sweet boardgame that pitches the study group against each other for priority registration.  Roll the dice and battle through hilarious trivia, references, and jokes in a Candyland-esque fashion as you make way for priority registration.  Check below for the entire image as well as click on it to get a full version.  You may want to save this to print out later for an actual board game.  TV kudos to anyone who actually does this.

In other Community news: Community is reschedule to come back March 15th at 8:00 pm.  Unfortunately this pitches it up against Thursday night powerhouse Big Bang Theory, but in the state of NBC, I’m sure it will remain one of the stronger candidates for renewel.

In other, other Community news: I recently watched The Descendants [wait for my review next week along with Hugo], and I saw Jim Rash aka Dean Pelton was one of the main accredited writers.  I would love to see a Jim Rash acceptance speech, but not over a Kristen Wiig acceptance speech.  But in all honesty I would just love it if any of those two showed up and held one of those statues.

The True Modern Day Marshall: FX’s Justified

When I first tried to get into this show, I actually had to Google the difference between the US Marshall Services and the difference between the FBI, State, and Local Police.  You’d think at first glance they’d solve crimes like the people on Dexter, CSI, Law and Order, generic crime show.  But the US Marshalls deal specifically with tracking down federal fugitives and escorting government-important personnel.  So here I am, all caught up with the shenanigans of US Deputy Marshall Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) and criminal mastermind Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins).  Givens is a wise cracking, cowboy hat wearing, southern twang talking, Han Solo-esque men of men who tracks down the baddies while protecting the ones he cares for with his favorite pistol by his side and a conflicted sense of morality.  Crowder is a spiritually conflicted man who has used his wit to slither his way through the crime rings of Harlan County, Kentucky, as he tries to take back the town his family once owned. Combined with cultural insight to southern lifestyles, an amazing cast, and a surprisingly central and amazing storyline, Raylan Givens and company give us one of the most badass shows on air.

Raylan Givens has recently been transferred from the US Deputy Marshall service in Miami back to his hometown in Kentucky for seemingly gunning down a drug lord in plain sight in the light of day.  The chief is hesitant to add him to his team for Givens’s unorthodox and trigger happy methods, but can’t deny that Givens brings results when it comes to tracking down Kentucky’s most wanted.  As Givens returns home, he encounters his criminally estranged father, the step mother who raised him, a sour ex-wife, an old crush, and his old friend from his coal mine who has turned into one of Kentucky’s most dangerous terrorists, Boyd Crowder.  Raylan deals with himself, these people, and Kentucky’s most wanted as he gunslings everywhere from Lexington to Frankfurt to Harlan County.  Minor spoilers ahead, keep reading for more detail.

Cracked has this annoying tendency to make some of the BEST photoshop contests that attract some of them most clever participants.  And when I mean annoying, I mean awesome.  The premise is simple.  Take a serious drama, action movie, etc. and put the slightest hint of cliche rom-com elements, and you’ve got an amazing new poster for a new movie I’d definitely watch.  I’ve compiled here some of my favorites, but definitely hit the entire gallery here if you want/need more.

Character Profile: Jack Skellington

Jack Skellington is the maestro of Halloween.  He’s the scariest cat in town and seems to be the most ambitious.  After getting tired of celebrating Halloween for countless years, he tries to take another holiday for his own and ends up biting off more than he can chew.  So I’ve compiled a bit of a biography, image, and video gallery to honor the master of Halloween.

A Serious Debate: Should I Read the Song of Ice and Fire Series?

There’s a very strong debate swinging in my head. In anticipation for Game of Thrones season 2, I’ve already made the conviction to read the book A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin. This was to gain insight to some of the ulterior moves of some characters and I’ve been told time and time again that the television show, while a great adaptation, holds no comparison to the book. Seeing as I’ve already seen the series on television, there will likely be little spoilers as I read the book.

Now here comes the debate. As soon as I finish the first book, Game of Thrones season 2 is heavily based on the George R.R. Martin’s second book, A Clash of Kings. The debate is whether or not I should read the book before/during season 2 and spoil the television series. Hit the jump for some back story to help you get some perspective on the situation. Incredibly spoilertastic to those who haven’t watched the series, but no spoilers for those who kept up with the book series. A while back, I posted a grown up trailer for Nickelodeon’s Rugrats that depicted the show as a creepy psychological thriller.  Here’s more 90’s cartoon nostalgia with Nickoldeon’s Doug to be portrayed as a Indie-Dramedy.  A couple of things I liked that they maintained the actual skin colors of some of the characters as well as portrayed some of the series deeper inside jokes.  Truly only 90’s children will understand every quote and scene referenced in the series.

And someone seriously needs to teach Patty Mayonaise how to wear a bra.  Those things are all over the place.

Coping with the Rise of the Talkies: The Artist Review

Saying this only makes me look wet behind the ears and a greenhorn of a movie watcher: The Artist is the first silent film I’ve ever seen. Slap me on the hands, unsubscribe, believe me to lose any credibility I had, but I think admitting this is important to the impact this movie has had on me. For the longest time, I’ve put most movies made before the 1950s on the back burner because I’ve believed them to be ‘inferior’ and ‘a chore’ to watch compared to the colored, talking, and contemporary films that are being released today. And if the Artist is ANYTHING like the films made in the 30s, 40s, and 50s, then I’ve been wasting my time watching and reviewing movies like Real Steel and Happy Feet 2.

George Valentin (Jean Dujardin) is an arrogant and proud silent film star. After he helps a charming Peppy Miller (Bérénice Bejo) get a job in acting, he’s suddenly faced with changing times as the talkies begin to change the industry. When he gets left in the dust and watches Peppy on the road to stardom, George begins to take to drink and walks on a road to self-destruction.

The Great Dictator’s Speech Gets Even Better

One of the greatest speeches in film, is re-edited here to bring an even more powerful message.  I unforunately have yet to actually watch this movie, but I got sent this clip and absolutely have to show it to you guys.  Everything he says is still applicable today and you can’t help but tug a heart string as he crescendoes to his finale.  Definitely worth the watch.
