One of the most adorable on screen pairs, Joseph Gorden Levitt and Zooey Deschanel have once again paired up to perform an adorable duet. They obviously have a ton of chemistry together and I love one of the Youtube comments, ‘Joe is totally friendzoned’. Enjoy.

Taking a Stroll on the Boardwalk: Catching Up on Boardwalk Empire
Posted in Articles, Television, tagged Comedy, Entertainment, Film, Movies, news, Reviews, television, TV on January 27, 2012| 5 Comments »

I’ve heavily spent that last 2 weeks or so catching up on both seasons of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire. And I will tell you now, that I’m very hooked. This series is compelling, graphic, unforgiving, and just oh-so good. It’s an absolute gold mine for US history buffs and those who love the gangster drama. Martin Scorsese produces and even directed the very first episode and the amount of detail in representing the best and the worst of the 1920s. I highly recommend if you aren’t watching, that you find yourself some copies and sit through the literal 24 hour [2 seasons, 12 episodes each, one hour long] roller coaster ride that Nucky Thompson and friends take you on.
Enoch ‘Nucky’ Thompson (Steve Buscemi)is a crooked county treasure in the beautiful town of Atlantic City, New Jersey. Just as the Volstead Act [Prohibition] is passed, he and his council including mayors, governors, sheriffs, and other political figures raise a glass of the finest whiskies. Just like the tagline said: “When alcohol was outlawed, outlaws became kings”. Thompson technically owns Atlantic City as he controls the influx of Alcohol and hands out money like candy. In the eyes of the public, he’s a dedicated man of service, and in the criminal underworld, he’s one of the most feared men on the Eastern coast. When he gets tangled with the law, rival factions, lovers and betrayers, Thompson must use his wit and resources to keep control of the town he owns. By any means necessary.
Morning Oatmeal: The Best Lines of 2011

Naturally, one could try and compile all the best lines on TV in the year 2011. Huffington post recently tried to do so and in all honesty, I’m quite disappointed. Don’t get me wrong, the feat is rather extraordinary because theoretically one would have to go back through all of TV and find the best lines. Regardless this list is all right, but I honestly believe there is one that is better out there.
10 Chick-Flicks/Rom-Coms I’m Not Ashamed to Love Out Loud

Obviously there’s a lot of trash lying around in the entertainment industry also known as the romantic comedy. What’s Your Number, The Bounty Hunter, most Katherine Heigl movies, etc. These movies are specifically catered to the female demographic and the unfortunate souls they bring along with them to the movie theater or the viewing couch. As a fairly metrosexual man myself, even I have limits as to what trash I will sit through. Sometimes when I have conversations with women about movies, they’ll start listing movies such as these as their favorites and I have to force myself to not roll my eyes, but sometimes it’s just too much. After shaking my head in disdain and slapping them on the hand for their poor taste, I’ll turn the conversation around on them by telling them these 10 movies that I consider rom-coms and chick flicks that won’t make your head explode from how bad they are.

Collider has gathered an opinion on what they consider the best TV shows of 2011. I have seen 4/6 they have listed and couldn’t agree with them, especially with their number 1 pick. Prepare thyselves Homeland and Louie, you’re on my queue.
Well Let’s See those Oscar Nominations

Well, the nomination list for movies biggest night is here. And I’m pleasantly surprised and angrily pissed off at the same time. Of course. The Academy will never be able to quench everyone’s thirst, and in all honesty, so far there isn’t as clear a winner as it was so obvious last year with the King’s Speech. Anyways, I’ve dedicated today’s Quips to the nomination list with a little color commentary. Enjoy
Best Picture [Adjusting from 10 to ‘fit’ the Academy’s best interests? 9 huh? Big change there Academy]
- The Artist
- The Descendants
- Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
- The Help
- Hugo
- Midnight in Paris
- Moneyball
- The Tree of Life
- War Horse
Yeah, Alcatraz is Pretty Unforgiving and Pretty Good

Fox’s Alcatraz aired last week and I’m still trying to feel it out. Three episodes have passed since it’s premier and I’ll admit I’m fairly hooked. Is this another cheesy ambitious detective paired with an unlikely partner cliche? It sure is. Is there an overbearing agency that is withholding information from our likable heroes? You’re damn right. But what Alcatraz has that transcends other cliche shows lies in its very interesting premise. In addition to that is that it’s fairly graphic and unforgiving. Usually shows won’t cross taboos of showing people, particularly young women, getting shot, and even include a surprising amount of gore to accompany it. A shocking addition on account we’re on a big named publically accessible network like Fox. Maybe it was to master producer and creater JJ Abrams idea to do this. Maybe this was a stint that we’ll only see in the first few episodes, but regardless Fox has done its job where it has hooked me in to follow it for a couple more weeks. But like Terra Nova, if this series fizzles, I’ll soon drop it like a hot tamale in favor for greener pastors. Read on below for my thoughts on the first couple of episodes.
It’s Guy Love Part 2

One of my all time favorite series was Scrubs. The series has been cancelled for a couple of years now. But in its time, it was definitely one of the funniest shows on air. It fortunately gave us one of the biggest bromances to ever air on television: John Dorian and Chris Turk. Of course, real life actors Zach Braff and Donald Faison share quite the bromance themselves. This holiday they released this awesome music video which I like to think of as Guy Love part 2. That aside, I wonder what they’re up to these days. Faison was in that awful movie Skyline, and I haven’t seen Braff anywhere for a while.
Banana Unpeeled DVD Review: Cowboys & Aliens

Getting Harrison Ford out of bed to do a movie isn’t an easy task. You either have to be George Lucas/Steven Spielberg or he must owe you a favor. So when rumors were out that he was doing a cowboy movie, the industry was fairly intrigued in what he was signing up for. There was a large number of things that made Cowboys & Aliens look like a promising project: news released that he would costar with Daniel Craig, and Iron Man director Jon Favreau would be helming the project, and source material from a beloved graphic novel.
Jake Lonergan (Daniel Craig) wakes up in the middle of a desert with a wound on his side, mysterious piece of swag attached to his arm, and an inability to recollect anything that happened to him. When he finally makes his way back into town, he finds out that he’s a wanted criminal and is prepared to be shipped off to jail by the bad-ass Indian fighter warhero, Woodrow Dolarhyde. All of a sudden the town they’re in is attacked my mysterious flying spaceships that abduct some of the townsfolk. After all the rubble settles, the remaining settlers, including a mysteriously beautiful Ella Swenson (Olivia Wilde), accompany the two of them on a journey to recover their townsfolk as they travel the dangerous west where they encounter bandits, Indians, and more aliens.
The Cast of Parks and Recreation have Hidden Talents

The people’s choice awards were a couple of weeks ago, and naturally there were a couple of amusing clips inbetween the award show. One of the best includes this cute video about the cast of Parks and Recreation where each cast member goes over their hidden talents. Definitely worth a watch.

The idea of a period drama about a repressed ethnic group is usually the first sign of Oscar bait. I find that most period dramas distinguish themselves with others through the strength of the cast. Mainly because with period dramas, one can usually determine the outcome of the stories with relative ease and there’s only so many ways a director can make a period drama stylish. There are only so many endings to stories about an African American woman in the 1950s. The same can be said about most period dramas, given because they’re based on historical fact. In The Help, the incredibly strong cast and a touching script drove it home and may be one of the more emotional movies I’ve seen this year.
Aibileene Clark (Viola Davis) and Minny Jackson (Octavia Spencer) are one of the dozens of African American maids working in Jackson, Alabama for white families in 1950s America during the peak of the Civil Rights movement. Being in the south, new ideas and racial equality haven’t necessarily reached them, so much to the point ‘The Help’ are even punished if they use the same toilets as their employers. When Skeeter Phelan (Emma Stone), an ambitious young journalist, wants to write their story, Aibileene and Minny are reluctant at first, but the increasing tensions of the Civil Rights movements slowly change their minds.
Mid-Season Television Preview

Television is returning after a long holiday hiatus. And it’s time to get a plethora of new shows as well as the return of some beloved ones. And just like the Fall Check Up and Preview I did last fall, I’m here to share with you guys what I’ll be tuning into this season. Personally, it feels as though Fall TV is better than Mid-season. With greats like Dexter, It’s Always Sunny, and a couple of others having only a 12 episode run, I’ve always wondered what filled those time slots in the Spring. After doing a little research, I’ve seen that there are gems that I haven’t quite uncovered yet such as: Justified, Shameless, and 30 Rock. So I’m going to be dedicating my time now to play catch up. And that’s not even counting all the new series coming out. As usual, it’s a gamble to try to get into new shows, mainly because you don’t know if it will be a waste of time or not, but I’ve got some faith in some in the appeal of some of these new shows. I’ll update you later in the season to tell you how it’s going.
Banana Unpeeled DVD Review: The Hangover, Part 2

Todd Phillips follows up his 100 million dollar R-rated comedy hit in 2009 with a sequel set in Bangkok. As with most sequels, there lies the difficulty in making it bigger, badder, and better than the first one and simultaneously maintaining a sense or originality. Here in the Hangover Part 2, it doesn’t even look like Todd Phillips tried to make this second movie more original, as it’s a copy and cut paste from scene to scene. And while the funny Alan jokes are still there and the slapstick is a bit more disgusting than the first one, the movie loses the general shock and awe that made us fall in love with the wolf pack in the first place in favor of shedding light on the dangers of Bangkok. And with no change or twist to distinguish itself from the first one, it’s difficult to call Hangover Part 2 nothing more than a good reason to send these guys to a tropical paradise for a couple of weeks to reshoot a movie they already did.
When Stu (Ed Helms) is getting married [again], he sends himself and the wolfpack [Zach Galifianakis, Bradley Cooper] to Thailand for the ceremony and to meet his fiancé’s family. The trio have one beer next to a calm bonfire on the beach with their fiancé’s brother and next thing they know they wake up in a motel somewhere in the middle of Bangkok, with new slew of slapstick shticks: a tattooed face, a shaved head, and a highly trained monkey. They find out that Stu’s fiancé’s brother is missing and set out onto Thailand in an attempt to regain their memory and find him
Banana Unpeeled DVD Review: 30 Minutes or Less
Posted in Movies, Reviews, tagged Aziz Ansari, Bank Robber, Bomb, Comedy, Danny McBride, Jessie Eisenberg, Movies, Nick Swardson, Pizza, Reviews on November 25, 2011| 1 Comment »

How does a lazy pizza boy and his small Indian school-teacher friend react when they’re forced to rob a bank? Why, they simply go to the closest dollar tree, get some spray paint, some toy guns, ski masks, and go the closest bank that’s how. Forget the hesitation, paranoia, and other basic human emotion and let’s just have them be able to outrun the cops, deal with guns pointed in their faces, and bombs strapped to their chests. That’s where 30 Minutes or Less does wrong, while it provides decent comedy in its leads, it’s not irreverent enough to qualify as the good kind of absurd nor is it believable enough carry the heart it tries to convey.
Banana Unpeeled DVD Review: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

I finally got around to watching this latest installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean series. There’s a number of different things about this last one. 1) The dropping of the series main couple, Will and Elizabeth Turner, 2) The shift away from the Davy Jones plot for the fountain of youth story, and 3) A slew of new characters. For better or for worse? Does this movie recapture the magic from the first one? Unfortunately, as Captain Jack Sparrow’s legacy battling zombies, Spaniards, and Blackbeard grows, his mannerisms, sword fights, and dramatic escapes have stayed relatively the same. So just because some new faces were slapped on, Pirates round 4 doesn’t offer anything substantially new, it does however provide itself as a fairly decent action flick involving one of the most iconic characters in movie history.

Banana Unpeeled DVD Review: Transformers Dark of the Moon

It’s just a week for movie reviews isn’t it? There was a lot of talk from Michael Bay about his follow-up to his multimillion dollar Transformers franchise. There was talk about how even he himself thought the second one was absolutely horrible – all ranging from the acting to the story. He claimed he would fix a lot of these mistakes in his third and final chapter of the Transformers series, including the incomprehensible story and the fact that too many people kept dying and coming back to life. Despite these atrocious elements that made watching the second one unbearable, it still provided itself as a means to fill the destruction and sci-fi chaos that my inner 10 year old occasionally required. I figured Dark of the Moon would be similar. So even though I knew itwas going to be a trip from hell, I watched it anyways.
Banana Unpeeled DVD Review: Horrible Bosses

I’m not exactly in the demographic this movie is aimed at. as I’m still 19 and kinda far from having a boss that I’d like to kill, but that doesn’t make this movie any less relatable. Horrible Bosses does a good job in finding likable protagonists and villains to entertain those who don’t have bosses they want to kill. The story itself isn’t too original or great and not all the jokes soar, but the cast is what really shines here. It’s very clear that the cast has fun filming most of the movie and it shows in their dialogue. Whether it be Colin Farrell’s suprisingly comedic chops, Jennifer Aniston’s delightful naughtiness, or Charlie Day screaming, Horrible Bosses is a character driven movie that’s likely worth your while.
Banana Unpeeled Review: Drive

I’ve never known Ryan Gosling to be an action star. I’ve affiliated him with movies like Crazy, Stupid, Love, The Notebook, Lars and the Real Girl, and Blue Valentine – a very talented actor who should stick with dramas. So when I saw him in this movie with a premise very similar to Transporter, I was confused if whether or not he was simply getting a paycheck or if he found something special in the script he read. After sitting through it, I found out which one of those were true. And it turns out Ryan Gosling doesn’t need and likely never will require a ‘paycheck’ because Drive turns out to be one the best films of the year, and you’ll be seeing Gosling again and again after his mesmerizing performance. SPOILERS.
