Obviously there’s a lot of trash lying around in the entertainment industry also known as the romantic comedy. What’s Your Number, The Bounty Hunter, most Katherine Heigl movies, etc. These movies are specifically catered to the female demographic and the unfortunate souls they bring along with them to the movie theater or the viewing couch. As a fairly metrosexual man myself, even I have limits as to what trash I will sit through. Sometimes when I have conversations with women about movies, they’ll start listing movies such as these as their favorites and I have to force myself to not roll my eyes, but sometimes it’s just too much. After shaking my head in disdain and slapping them on the hand for their poor taste, I’ll turn the conversation around on them by telling them these 10 movies that I consider rom-coms and chick flicks that won’t make your head explode from how bad they are.
(500) Days of Summer
Originality lets this movie soar like no other. There just are no other love stories like it. Even with the disclaimer from the beginning: this is not a love story, this movie takes on an unforgettable ride about the truths of relationships and the stages we go through as we try to find true love. Plenty of indie flair, a fantastic sound track, and unforgettable performances, (500) Days of Summer was an excellent love story that for once didn’t end happily ever after and we were all okay with it.
Love, Actually
I like to think of this as the original ‘stuff 500 movie characters into one film and make multiple story lines’. If you know I’m wrong, please feel free to correct me and enlighten me on what is. Unfortunately this is also the movie that inspired horrible films like Valentines Day and New Year’s Eve. What sets this movie apart is that it did the formula right and had plenty of enjoyable performances and stories. And everyone’s British! With plenty of British flair that even stretches to American soil and with story lines ranging from the Prime Minister to some adult film stars, this movie is not to be missed.
Ghost Town
You wouldn’t expect a romantic comedy with Ricky Gervais to be very charming. But with the beautiful Tea Leoni holding mummy penises and a charming Greg Kinnear ghost that follows Gervais around, everything is wonderful. This movie has sharp writing and a biting performance by Gervais that makes this one of the more enjoyable rom-coms with a superstitious twist.
Juno
Indie flair combined with real world problems make this movie an enjoyable and eye opening romp. About a girl dealing with a teenage pregnancy, there’s just so much style to be had here as well as a very convincing performance by Ellen Page.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Originality + love stories always sucker me in. This tale is about a man who wipes his girlfriend from his memory and is on a journey in his mind to get her back. Instantly unforgettable and carrying a message that love conquers all, having a heart string tugged comes with the entire package. Man the tissues and bed pillows!
This is a solid list. I’ve seen about three quarters of it and the two that jumped out at me were Legally Blonde and Juno.
Now, Juno is the manlier of the two, but they both are aimed at the ladies.
One I would add to your list (off the top of my head) would be Music & Lyrics. i think the chemistry between Grant and Berrymore is tangible.
Juno is actually one of my favorite movies. I saw Ellen Page at Comic Con in San Diego once.
ha!nice list.yes to Legally Blond,also one of my favorite rom-coms.but wait,no 50 first dates?
I agree with your for the ones I have watched. Good List.
