After reading numerous articles regarding the hype that was Attack on Titan, I decided to break my usual television catch up sessions and watch an anime show despite never really watching anime.  After 20+ grueling episodes, I was absolutely floored with the gorgeous animation, engaging characters, and heart stopping action and story.  I was compelled to write this very positive review and it appeared that I wasn’t alone in my love of the show.

Since then I’ve been thirsty for a new anime show to fill the hole of pure awesomeness Attack on Titan left when I was finished with the show.   I looked through a couple of lists, namely Kotaku regarding some of the best anime of the season/2013 and I followed up on what I thought were some very good picks.  Keep in mind, I’m not normally accustomed to certain levels of ridiculous when it comes to anime shows.  Which meant I tried to stay away from generic ‘fantasy/medieval’ anime with knights in boob armor.  Nor was I fan of generic ‘gundam’/Pacific Rim anime with typecast pilots in giant robots, where intense fighting is about half of the series.  Oh I’m also not into harem anime with a single boy in a school of girls in which the show tries to service the fans at any moment with accidental boob grabs and panty shots.  Maybe I’m not as familiar with anime anymore, but I’m pretty sure I’ve crossed off about 90% of contemporary anime.  Some of the shows I watched fall into this category and hell, even Attack on Titan at some point falls into some of these categories, but I was truly looking for something special and engaging.

My search yielded some good time burners and quality anime watched, but I think still haven’t found anything close to the level of ‘I CAN’T STOP WATCHING’ that Attack on Titan gave me.  There might be one show in this list that will do that job…Here’s a run down of the anime I watched and what I thought.

Stumbled upon this while browsing the internet and couldn’t help myself. This animation is definitely worth checking out, although I seem to be on an animation streak this past few weeks. Hopefully you guys enjoy the rather odd and somewhat heartwarming story of a girl and her…demon. I think we all have that one person we can relate to that just gets under our skin like the protagonist in this short, but hopefully not everyone resorts to demonic rituals and rainbows. Let me know what you guys think!

Out of Sight

This was an adorable and interesting animation stumbled upon earlier this week. Following the adventures of a blind girl, it allows you to essentially walk a mile in her shoes…or her head. I don’t really have much else to add besides how impressed I am at how well this is done. It reminds me of a short painting animation I recall seeing online a while back. I’ll also be sure to share that one if I ever find it again. Enjoy!

I have two cousins around the age of 9 and 4.  When they come visit me [or I come visit them from college], I, my parents, and my uncle and aunt have found television a great way to pacify them.  As cruel and demeaning to them as it sounds, I’m sure my parent readers know what it’s like to require some peace and quiet.  But when I don’t feel old enough to talk to my parents and uncles and aunts [although I’m 20, so I feel as though I should], more than often, I sit with them to see what’s still running on good old Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network these days.  Truth be told, I’m pretty disgusted in what flies as acceptable for cartoon shows these days.  Things like this Gumball show or Chowder, what have you.  I don’t identify with any of it.  But I’m probably as disgusted as my parents were when I turned on shows like Spongebob and Fairly Odd Parents in the 2000s, and even shows like Doug and Rockos Modern Life in the 90s.  Regardless, despite the childish aspect of some of these cartoon shows, there are a couple of respectable cartoon shows that, while catered to children, also capture my interest due to themes only adults would get and character/story development that goes far beyond the minds of the targeted demographic.  Below I’ve compiled 5 cartoon shows that are catered to mostly children and my explanations as to why a 20 year old like myself would totally still watch it.

With Cars 2 pretty much out of the way for the best animated picture of the year, Dreamworks has a pretty good chance at nabbing the spot with their two blockbusters this year: Kung Fu Panda 2 and Puss in Boots.  I’ve finally gotten a chance to see Kung Fu Panda 2, the sequel to the very enjoyable original Kung Fu Panda released in 2008.  As with most sequels [once again as exemplified in Cars 2], it’s risky to come up with both an engaging and original story.  But with a strong emotional story and fleshing out its likable supporting players in balance with its lead, Kung Fu Panda 2 exceeds my expectations and is, in my opinion, the best shot of best animated picture of the year.

It’s difficult how to process this.  This could easily be another fantastic Pixar hit.  Or it could possibly be leaning on the lines of How to Train Your Dragon that was made by Dreamworks Animation a couple of years ago.  It was almost too eerily similar.  Just trade in scrawny figure for girl and it almost looks and sounds like the same movie.  But Pixar usually doesn’t let us down and at least I can say the visuals look great.
