Cartoony yet stylish...I like it!

Imagine yourself stranded on a hostile planet, your only form of transportation now shooting across the sky in multiple fiery pieces, dissolving into the atmosphere and leaving you to explore the unknown with what may very well be the last of your kind. Despite being cliche, this setup has been a staple of the science fiction community since it has existed. The lone adventurer or group of companions battling the evil alien menace, although in this case you may just be as alien as the planet around you. Welcome to the world of Spiral Knights, a free-to-play MMORPG mixed with a dungeon crawler, developed by Three Rings. For those of you who don’t know, Three Rings is a company that was recently purchased by Sega, and that’s about all we know about them besides the fact that they made Spiral Knights.

Spiral Knights starts the player off right outside a crashed pod, almost reminiscent of the orbital drops from Halo for lack of a better comparison. This begins the tutorial, in which the player is taught the basic controls, which are simple enough to understand. The player moves utilizing the WASD keys and controls almost everything else with the mouse. Before I continue to the story, however, I must include a bit more in-depth explanation of the mechanics. The currency in the game is known as crowns, which can be collected by defeating enemies, breaking boxes, or reaching the elevator located at the end of each level. There is a secondary form of currency known as Energy, which is also required to craft new items as well as proceed further into the main dungeon of the game, otherwise known as the ‘Clockworks’. There are two forms of energy the player can use to do the aforementioned crafting or dungeon crawling. First and foremost is Mist Energy, which regenerates over time. Regardless of how high level you consider yourself to be, or how much money you have, the Mist Energy cap will always remain static at 100. There is no increasing it through items or regenerating it faster, you simply wait for that gauge to fill by a measly one energy every thirteen minutes. Secondly, there is Crystal Energy, which has no limit, but is infinitely harder to obtain. Crystal Energy can only be made by either purchasing it from other players or buying in bulk using real money at the in-game store. There is a major problem with this system, but I’ll cover that later, after I flesh out the story a little more. (more…)

Being a video game blog along with movies and television, I’m going to try and catch up with the relative lack of posts the video game category currently has.  And today I’m going to go through the list of games that I’m buying brand spanking new [used games are a different issue to be discussed in a different time].  2012 had quite the roster of highly anticipated games, and I can’t wait to get my hands on the following 5.  Ordered based on release date.

I had a dream that this blog would expand to just more than little ol’ me writing, editing, drawing, and formatting up a storm.  And now it has come to life with the addition of a new contributer, SoGoCJE, who has graciously agreed to be a video game correspondent now that Bananafeed has gone full dork, now covering movie, television, and video games.   I’ve decided to start him as a weekly Thursday contributor, bringing his thoughts on the newest and greatest news on the video game industry.  Please welcome him when he has his first post this Thursday at 12:00 EST.

There’s a lot of excitement in expanding Banana Feed, only a year ago was I mucking around 4-8 views a day, and here I am adding new contributors. A long way I’ve come.  And I hope SoGoCJE and I continue to entertain you guys with our thoughts, opinions, and musings.

In terms of maintenance, our site is going under a series of changes.  The About Us page and Weekly Feature are two new things I’m trying to implement.  Be sure to hang on as we undergo multiple page constructions.

Here it is lady and gentlemen, my first pure video game related post.  Today I’m talking about a game my friend recently let me borrow: Gearbox’s 2009 shooter RPG, Borderlands.  The format of these posts will usually be about my personal experiences with the game and what I’ll praise and critique about it. Before I begin talking about my experiences/thoughts about the game, I’ll give you a quick summary regarding some back story.

The planet of Pandora is a desolate wasteland.  The world seems to be run by bandits and the dangerous wildlife that inhabits it.  A team of treasure hunters have been sent in to discover the ultimate treasure, only known as the vault, on Pandora.  You take control of one of the four ‘classes’: a hunter who uses sniper rifles, revolvers, and a deadly bird, a siren, who specializes in smgs, and disappearing in and out of battle, a soldier, who keeps a portable turret, a combat rifle, and shotgun at his sides at all times, and the berserker, who when enraged, starts punching things with his fist.  On your way to finding the vault, you’ll need to blast your way through hordes of bandits, animals, and bosses if you want to survive.

It might be out of taste because it’s totally so last year, but it doesn’t change the fact I stumbled into this amazingly well done RPG representation of one of the best dramas on television.  It beat out Game of Thrones last year in my opinion, and with filming occurring this year for it’s final season, it’s the only reason why Game of Thrones will probably nab my favorite spot.  I’m off topic, so let me circle back.  Today I give you two different adaptations of a Breaking Bad Video Game.  The one above was done by Johnny Utah who’s taken the Street Fighter Route to tastefully include small jokes made throughout the entire series, and the one below follows a more Japanese/Korean style RPG made by College Humor.  Enjoy them both.

If you’ve been reading my blog for the past couple of months, every once in a while I’ll mention that ‘we’re not a video game blog/I’m trying to get into writing about video gaming’ rants.  Well today is the announcement that I’ll be writing and posting video game related items more often and I’ve officially added it as a category.  Soon enough I’ll add it to the list of banners as well as it’s own icon on the right.  I think at this point, I’ve fully engulfed the ‘geek site’ mantra/persona as now I’m covering movies, television, and now video games. You can now expect video game morning banana oatmeals, full blown articles about games I’ve picked up on, and other gamer related culture.  Read more regarding a little background on my own video game experience.
