Now let’s talk mechanics, but keep in mind I’m talking mainly about Summoner’s Rift with this article, so some things may vary, such as lanes and towers.
Each champion in League of Legends has a total of 5 abilities. One is a passive, which every champion starts with and more than likely scales with your champion the longer the game goes on. Three of them are normal abilities with relatively short cool down timers, ranging from maybe 2-11 seconds depending on the ability in question. You are allowed to put a point in each ability with each level up, maxing each ability out at level 3. The final ability is known as an ‘ultimate’, which does considerably more than a regular ability in terms of sheer damage or effect, but has a much longer cool down, going all the way up to 100 or more seconds depending on the ability. You are only allowed to level up your ultimate ability at levels 6, 11, and 16.
Now, in terms of champions there are two different builds, there is a skill build, which focuses on the order of how you level and obtain your abilities, and an item build, which focuses on what items you buy from the in-game store such as boots, which increase movement speed, wards, which give you sight of an area on the map for a certain duration of time, and potions, which heal your character over time up to a certain amount of health points. Your skill build may essentially make a difference in damage per second, or dps, as some skills are better leveling up sooner than others for a variety of reasons, such as decreased cool down timer or more damage. Your item build matters as well, but certain character archetypes have a certain item or set of items that are generally built on them ALL THE TIME, so sometimes it doesn’t even matter. I like to stress that there is a customization of sorts such as when to build what, but a majority of the time people focus a lot on how fast someone has a certain item in a game.
I mentioned archetypes earlier, and I’d like to flesh that out a little more before moving onto meta-game, creeps, lanes, and towers. Certain characters are good at certain things. Each character can be divided into an archetype, of which the main 5 are ranged DPS, tanky DPS/bruiser, AP, support, and jungler. A ranged DPS character attacks from afar with physical attacks, utilizing weapons such as guns or bows to do a majority of their damage. A tanky DPS/bruiser is usually a very durable melee fighter that can take as much damage as he/she dishes out. An AP character is a mage who focuses solely on building items that grant them more AP, or ability power, to do more damage with their spells. A support character is just that, someone who builds support items with AoE abilities and generally stays back, healing and buffing the team during skirmishes. Finally, a jungler is someone who stays in the jungle and ambushes, the enemy team in their lanes, punishing them for over-extending or being unaware, otherwise known as ganking.
