4) Gangs of New York

Daniel Day Lewis’s role as Bill the Butcher pulled this from a 6 to a 4. This film was a very cool take on the politics and social structure during the time of the Civil War. This movie isn’t necessarily ‘better’ than the ones that proceeded it, but more than often I’ll watch the opening just to see the bloody war and end up sticking around for the next two hours.
3) The Aviator

This choice as number three is HEAVILY anchored down by the Oscar-worthy performance by DiCaprio. Nominated three times, DiCaprio is owed one just as much as Scorsese was owed one until 2006’s The Departed. His role as Howard Hughes is mesmerizing and entrancing as he evolves from an ambitious movie maker to a near-schizophrenic paranoia.
2) Goodfellas

The amazing transformation of Ray Liotta’s Henry Hill life as a gangster is by far one of the most unforgettable rides I’ve ever been on. It’s brilliant, solidly acted by it’s supporting characters DeNiro and Pesci, graphic, and perfectly executed by Scorsese. Reminiscent of a more realistic and stylish Scarface.
1) The Departed

There’s a reason I chose this movie for my favorite 21st century Best Picture Winner. With a slew of award winning performances, an engaging script, and fantastic execution, I’d watch The Departed over his other movies on most occasions. Absolutely unforgettable. It’s hard to compete.
Let me know where I screwed up. I’m always welcome to criticism.
