Martin Scorsese is widely regarded as one of the best directors in the industry today. You don’t need to be a film buff to enjoy most of his work, but if you are, you can appreciate it all the more. He has a large resume of impressive movies ranging from Goodfellas to Gangs of New York. He’s directed some of the most mesmerizing performances from Robert DeNiro and Leonardo DiCaprio. The last Director Filmography Ranked I did was for Christopher Nolan, and like him, it’s incredibly difficult to place one movie in front of another. So I eventually had to base it more off of what I’d rewatch over and over again. Hit the jump for the [very flawed and biased] ranking of the 8 Martin Scorsese movies I’ve seen so far. Be sure to recommend to me any ones I missed. I’ve particularly heard Casino is very good.
8 ) Raging Bull
This movie was neat. The reason it’s the last one is because I didn’t really know anything about the boxer, Jake la Motta. The way Scorsese and DeNiro portrayed him greatly interested me to the point where I wikipediaed him throughout and after the movie, but seeing the movie was often extremely graphic and there were some points I couldn’t get behind the self-destructive Jake la Motta. I’m very mixed about placing this as 8, but something’s gotta be. Regardless, it’s mainly 8 because I wouldn’t watch this one over and over again.
7) Shutter Island
This is a very solid psychological thriller, far better than what other directors came up with. There is a satisfying twist and is fairly well acted throughout. That being said, having this as number 7 is hard, but I think the other movies on this list are a wee bit more memorable.
6) Cape Fear
The most memorable aspect of this movie is Robert DeNiro’s turn as a psychotic killer/stalker. DeNiro was absolutely horrifying as he hunted the family that seemingly put him in jail and delivered a number of spine chilling moments.
5) Taxi Driver
This is a GREAT movie. It’s mesmerizing, horrifying, redeeming, and simply beautiful. It just takes a lot of energy to watch this movie. The reason this is so far up is because it seriously takes energy to be able to fully appreciate everything this movie is. That being said, I’ve had to bump it up from the top 4 because if you had Scorsese’s filmography in front of me, I would’ve chosen other movies over this flick for simply escapist reasons.
