Sony

Big Bombs: The Last of Us, Beyond: Two Souls, Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale, God of War: Ascension,
Big Flops: Playstation Move Spellbook
Alright, so Sony brought the big guns out this time, opening with Beyond and ending with The Last of Us. While Beyond may be made by the same dev company that created and gave us Heavy Rain, it feels like a completely new breath of life compared to its predecessor. While we haven’t seen much of anything concerning gameplay, I’m sure it will be an immersing, breath-taking story that will have people feeling as they did while playing Heavy Rain. Additionally, The Last of Us, Sony’s new post-apocalyptic title, has amazed me just as it has during the past few times they’ve announced it. It looks good, from graphics to gameplay, and will definitely be something I intend to pick up on release lest anything change that doesn’t need to. Overall I was okay with Sony’s contribution to E3, although like the other major companies it rivals, I was not as impressed as I could have been in respect to previous E3s.
On a minor note, I did not feel for the new move peripheral whatsoever. The whole book idea sounds great on paper, but during post development it seems like something Sony shouldn’t have pushed for E3. Just as Microsoft had it’s flop with the more than 30 minutes of kinect and sports related titles, Sony flopped by showing us a glitched unpolished showroom product. You could see the hiccups during the demo, and I was thoroughly unimpressed by their showing this year concerning the move. Overall I enjoyed their conference more so than I enjoyed Microsoft’s, but I felt like they were all rushed in retrospect.
Beyond: Two Souls First Impression
Alright, so what is there to say about Beyond? Overall I thoroughly enjoyed the cinematic they gave us, which detailed the life of the protagonist at some point. We were told during the briefing that this game roughly covers over 20 years of her life, in which she establishes a relationship with some incorporeal being that can apparently destroy helicopters and do awesome things like possess cops. Overall I enjoyed watching the cinematic, and if the game ends up anywhere near having the depth of Heavy Rain, then it will be a must-have for me at some point. Stay tuned to see what develops.
The Last of Us First Impression
What’s this? Another survival game by the developers that brought us Uncharted, that’s what. This time around we find ourselves back in civilization with a catch…no civilization. In a post-apocalyptic world where a plague hunts humanity, people do what they must to survive. Despite this being primarily about fending off hordes of what people keep calling ‘zombies’, it has a nice sense of drama and realism in that not every human you encounter is good, and not every good Samaritan ends up being good either. In a gritty realization of the struggle for the last dredges of humanity, The Last of Us definitely captures a unique and intriguing aspect of what happens when things hit the fan. This will definitely make my to-play list.
Playstation All-Stars First Impression
In the tidbit of gameplay we got to witness, four players beat the tar out of each other with abilities that build meter into super abilities when you hit level 3. Overall it isn’t anything we haven’t seen before, and it’s obviously a blatant copy of Super Smash Bros., but that doesn’t make it any less cool and fun. A fighting game in which Parappa the Rapper can take out Kratos, the God of War? Yes please. It’s been a while since we’ve seen Parappa, and I’m not too sure if anyone knows Fat Princess, but I’m definitely loving the lineup so far, especially the Big Daddy character reveal we saw directly afterward. Big Daddy vs Kratos is definitely I fight I’d pay money to see, so I just might shell out and get this game on release.
God of War Ascension First Impression
It’s just like every other God of War game…this time before the God of War. I’m not really sure what else I can say about it besides the fact that people will buy it despite it being the same game essentially. I’m not gonna hate on it because a lot of people are seriously drooling over it, and they have their right to geek out over it, even if I’m just not a fan.
