Last week I was unable to do a Game of Thrones review due to finals week, but now that we’re back on regular schedule, this week’s Game of Thrones once again proves that there is never a dull moment as some of our characters are put on the hardest of trials. This week mainly avoids the adventures of Davos Seaworthy and the Red Woman in preparation of what is likely the siege of King’s Landing they were talking about. Instead there is heavy focus on Winterfell and North of Wall plot advancement along with some light dabbing of Dany, Ayra, and Tyrion. Get my plot summary below.
Theon Tries to Hold Winterfell
We’ve had a very heavy hint that Theon will attack Winterfell for a while now to prove his worth. In his scene where he ‘takes’ Winterfell, it’s constantly shown about his need to prove himself to damn near everybody. As you would expect, the people that took part raising him are not a fan of him marching in and claiming the city under the Greyjoy banner and this enrages him because he doesn’t believe he’s getting the respect he deserves. This is further proven when the longtime character Ser Rodrik Cassel is captured and is looked down upon for being a turn cloak and traitor. While you can see the inner turmoil Theon is going through, he’s persuaded that he must kill Cassel to prove an example. When Theon is further made fun of for not swinging the sword himself, he reluctantly tries to be the axeman where it becomes a bloody mess as he repeatedly tries to hack away at his head.
Jon Snow Finds Himself a Love Interest
Last episode, we saw Jon Snow join Qhorin Halfhand on a raid of a nearby outpost. Before the actual raid, we get an interesting perspective on Qhorin’s outlook on life north of the wall. He logically contradicts Jon Snow’s previous conceptions about how life works and this mainly serves as a point of how little Jon Snow really knows. The time the of actual raid is fairly interesting mainly because Jon Snow’s sword arm is stopped when he is tasked to kill a ferocious female wildling, Ygritte. The other Men of the Night’s Watch leave him to execute her, but when he fails, she runs off only to have her taken down again by Jon Snow what seems to be miles away from where he was supposed to meet up with his fellow team. The two must bunch up for warmth and Snow’s abstinence oath is tested when Ygritte tries to seduce him. I feel as though this can easily be misconstrued as Ygritte being a ‘wildling whore’, simply because we don’t know much about wildling culture. I only say this to defend Ygritte’s honor because I really like her and so far they’ve done a fairly good job of representing her from the book.
Tywin Gets Close to Ayra, Almost Too Close
At Harrenhal, Ayra Stark continues to be Tywin’s cup bearer as we get into the Lannister war effort. It appears Rob Stark is still winning the war and Tywin continues to get mad at his generals. After the men leave, we get some fairly touching banter between Tywin and Ayra. Personally, I like Tywin in the television series more than in the books, but maybe we haven’t gotten to a part to show Tywin’s true colors. I think the reason they’re cultivating this relationship [one not done in the books] is primarily because so Ayra doesn’t mention his name to ol’ Jaqen H’Ghar, the master assassin. But Ayra does have to call upon his services when Ayra takes advantage of her position as Tywin’s cup bearer by sneaking away some information and getting caught by one of Tywin’s generals. Jaqen makes fast work of the matter as expected of the master assassin. So I wonder who his next and final target will be…
Page 2 for The King’s Landing Massacre, Forbidden Romances, and Dragon Drama!
Where is the weasel soup scene!!! Haha
Ok, finished A Clash of Kings.
although I don’t remember anybody taking the dragons from Dany… oh, anyways. Can’t wait to see the t battle of King’s Landing…
No one did, the actual series has severed itself fairly well from the source material by using plot advances like that. I suppose it’s necessary to fit an 800 page behemoth into 10 hours though. You’ll easily crush through a storm of swords because so much awesome stuff happens. Be sure to keep me updated!
It’s interesting how we find almost the same frames in the show interesting, I made a review of this ep too and chose maybe two or three of the same ones you have here. LOL.
They’re cutting out Jeyne. Robb’s Red Cross girl is this invented character Talisa of Volantis. 😦
I keep telling myself it’s some sort of cover or some sort. But I do remember the producers talking about giving Robb something to do given his actual absence in the books.
It sounds I’m reading towards this all… I just read what you said about Joffrey, may the poo be with him. I LOVE Tyrion. I can’t read fast enough, really… but the series, I haven’t seen. I hope soon.
Haha I’m so excited for you. It’s just soooo good. I can’t wait for you to get to a storm of swords. Things get absolutely crazy in that one.
I will!!!
One question, just because I can’t wait to know: will I see Nymeria again? I’m just starting book 3.
Like most of the stark children, they’ll often slip into their wolf skins and ayra is no different, but as far as I am in the series, I haven’t encountered ayra seeing Nymeria 😦
So you haven’t finished the books then?
I’m in the first quarter of Feast for Crows, so there’s hope yet!
