4) John McClane vs. Terrorists vs. Cops vs. FBI vs. The Press
In most movies it’s usually Good Vs. Evil. Good guys vs. Terrorists. Etc. Etc. In Die Hard, not only does John McClane have to fight the terrorists, the cops, FBI, and the press are mucking up his mojo all along. In my opinion, I believe this was one of the more outrageous parts: the cops sheerly ignoring McClane’s warnings, the FBI completely not caring for human lives, and the Press exposing his family [eh, maybe that one’s not so outrageous]. But the movie did it justice when they tried to make it clear who to not vote for as we watched this movie, as I was yelling at the screen when all the stupid people in this movie were doing stupid things and then nodding my head in acceptance when they got their just desserts.
5) The Entire Film is Set in One Building
Remarkably, this entire movie is supposedly set in one building. The building itself was unfinished in the movie so despite being in one building, the range of sets had to be from the lobby, to the roof, to the main room, to the CEO’s room, to the unfurnished floors and vents. There was a sense of enclosure as we watched the movie so we could understand the idea of John McClane being trapped.
6) References to Past American Movie Heroes and John McClane Himself Becomes One.
I absolutely loved all the banter between Hans Gruber and John McClane. Their game of cat and mouse proved to set the groundwork for all hero/villain playful banter. My favorite quip is about how Hans Gruber claims that John McClane thinks he’s some big American hero like John Wayne, etc. While John McClane humbly denies that, in truth, he’s actually become as legendary as John Wayne in movie industry. Everyone knows who John McClane was and how supremely badass he was, and people always will. He’s essentially an American legend in movie cinema now. I just loved the correlation of that.
7) Yippee Kai Yay, Mother Fcker
Probably one of the most memorable lines in action movie history.
