4. The Universe is Far more Expansive than Most Universes
Let me try to put the universe in reference. This is a big map. And this map doesn’t even encompass the two other continents east of it. And with each map, there are multiple ‘houses’ that encompass entire families of characters. And with this many families, there are bound to be interesting characters such as disfigured dwarfen lords that that everyone must respect anyways, lady soldiers born in the wrong bodies that keeps them from being amongst the most skilled knights, ambitious boys trying to revive an old family rivalry, bastards that are trying make a name for themselves and exiled lawbreakers on the run. Each of these and more are interesting things to write about and George R.R. Martin weaves a story where these interesting characters have significant impact in the stories. There is so much history and mythlore to be had here, and watching/reading it unfold is an unforgettable and engaging journey.
5. There is No Black and White
As stated before, there is no traditional good and evil. The cliche ‘madman bent on destroying the world’ is no present here because I reiterate that this is a very realistic series. The motives of everyone are very relatable to the everyday person, and the actions of some of some of the characters, whether they’re despicable or not, are not far from what a normal person might do given the circumstances. Hypothetically, should a King kill his beloved friend if he conspires to kill his son? Without a doubt, any parent might, and given the age these people are in, this was the way things were done. And while you might hate the King for betraying his friend, would you have done differently if you were put in the same circumstance? I thought so. There are no heroes and villains in this series, there are different factions that have both good and bad, and it’s up to you to choose one to root for. Murderers and rapists might become heroes and your knights in shining armor might become pedophiles. This is that kind of series that always tries to play with your emotions and make you conflicted. And even if you think you’ve chosen the right people to root for for the right reasons, you can easily be proven wrong by what they’re pushed to do given the limits.
6. Everyone Will Be Talking About It, Except You, Unless You Do Something About It
Any magazine revolving around pop culture, television, and even movies has probably already mentioned the incoming return of the series. The internet is up in flames and videos on the internet have millions of views. Game of Thrones isn’t just for nerds anymore. While I’m a self declared nerd [I have a movie blog for god’s sake], I can find it easy for people who aren’t nerds to just as easily encapsulated by the series as I was. And if you’ve never geeked about anything [talking sports doesn’t count], it’s a really good feeling when someone has an impassioned theory on something you also have an impassioned theory about. It makes excellent conversation and can even help you find your significant other [good god, is this turning into a relationship advice site as well?]. So you probably don’t need to talk about Game of Thrones as much as I have been, but I swear as long as you can hold a ‘the conflict of Eddard Stark’ conversation, I’ll more than fill in the gaps and accommodate the facilitation to have a good natured conversation with you. Especially if you’re a woman in your early 20s…
