Have you ever finished a movie and by the end, you’ve been motivated to try something that the movie greatly expanded on? On several occasions, I’ve sat with my friends as the credits roll, and we’ve talked about how we could totally do what they did and reap the benefits of what the characters achieved on the screen. Unfortunately, like most things, it’s far easier said than done. Here’s 4 examples of me saying, ‘that could be us’ only to have me fall on my face.
Poker – Rounders
Watching Matt Damon break down the differences between suckers and pros was absolutely eye opening. And for the longest time after watching this movie, all I wanted to do was play poker and learn tricks with poker chips. I thought to myself that I could be the next champ and be sitting on thousands of dollars just from a hobby. Ultimately, I was only able to do some cool poker chip tricks after, but I never really started playing. But even if I did, just because I watched Rounders never meant I was any better. If I sat at a table of pros, they would snuff me out in an instant. But hey at least I can do the chip flip I learned.
Make a Website, Advertise, and Make Money – The Social Network
Take a look. This is the product of me trying to ‘hit it big’ on the web. There are plenty of ways to monetize on the internet, whether you write a blog or come up with a gimmick that gets people to visit and leads to advertisements. You never know what the next Xanga, Facebook, Myspace, Pandora, etc. will be. Although there are literally millions of websites that make money, everyone has to start somewhere. After watching The Social Network, I figured I could do the same thing, so here I am.
Here’s another attempt of me trying to monetize. My buddy and I bought a website domain in an attempt to make a website. It didn’t really work out.
Cook – Ratatouille
The message of this movie was that ‘anyone can cook’. I thought they were talking to me when they said that, so I went into a cooking phase, where I tried to know what I was doing as I made a batch of Japanese noodles. I was never able to beyond that. Unfortunately, the movie makes cooking out to be much harder than it looks, and I can imagine how difficult it is to go beyond being a novice cook. So to this day, instead of making and experimenting with new recipes, I’m still warming my $0.49 ramen noodles.
Manipulating Women – Crazy, Stupid, Love
Ah the controversial one. I can imagine this title threw a lot of you off, especially that it’s as slightly degrading to my female readers. But if you watched this movie, there’s a reason why Steve Carrell is upset with Ryan Gosling: it’s because he manipulates women into sleeping with him! If I were a women, I might be borderline disgusted about how he approaches them and how he makes them want him by the simple twisting of a couple of words. But the guy in me couldn’t help but take notes. He dresses nice, acts in an orderly manner, and apparently he’s a sex god. So of course we as men would take a couple of notes to put in our book so the next time we go out, we know exactly what to act/say.
I started playing poker after seeing a poker advertising on TV 🙂
