5. Minny – The Help

Octavia Spencer’s Minny and Viola Davis’s Aibileen were close competitors for this spot. Aibileen is far more fearless as the lead character, but goodness I still loved Minny so much. The fact I had to truly convince myself that Minny was a good competitor for the better lead in this role made the decision for me. I later found out I was fighting for her so much because I truly like her more. Minny was sassy, hilarious, complex, and she had a heart of gold.
4. Megan – Bridesmaids

Kristen Wiig did do a very good job in this movie. Kudos to her, but her scene stealing co-star Melissa McCarthy created one of the most memorable characters of the year. From the very beginning, she’s an absolute joy to watch every time she shows up on the screen with her zingers and one-liners. I’m sure you’ve read enough praise here and there about her character, so we’ll just leave it at that.
3. Caeser – Rise of the Planet of the Apes

Rise of the Planet of the Apes wasn’t about James Franco or any other human for that matter. It was about apes, one in particular, Andy Serkis’s Caeser, who he masterfully portrayed through motion capture technology. An ape with more emotion than any character in any of Michael Bay’s movies, we cared heavily about what would happen to him as he went through various trials and subsequently cheered him on as he took over California. After this movie, the word ‘No’, would never be the same.
2. Eric Lenshurr – X-Men First Class

Fassbender’s Magneto made this movie. He was raw, unforgiving, and extremely badass. Despite being the anti-hero, his methodology and justifications made sense and everything he did was powerfully memorable and, once again, incredibly badass. What’s even better about him is that we know Magneto becomes the bad guy in the future X-Men movies, but we can’t help understand where he’s coming from and we’ll even be more swayed towards his side of the mutants and humans conflict purely based on what events occurred in the movie. If Lenshurr’s general suave posture and interestingly conflicted mind aren’t enough, let lifting submarines and pushing coins through people’s foreheads take it home for you.
1. Lisbeth Salander – The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

It’s no surprise [for me] that my darling Lisbeth is number one. I’ll go ahead and tell you now that there is an extremely large amount of bias here because I’m simply in love with her based on the books. But Rooney Mara’s onscreen adaptation is as close to the Lisbeth Salander I’ve come to love. She’s malicious, beautiful, adorable, vulnerable and incredibly smart. The sheer complexity of her character and pure originality proves that Stieg Larsson has created one of them most interesting characters we’ve seen in a long time. I loved her in the Millennium Trilogy and in the movies. There’s something strangely attractive and magnetizing about her, even though she’s a damaged soul. She’ll always be my favorite literary character and movie character.

I haven’t seen all of these, but I’m a huge Johnny Depp fan, so Rango is one of my must-sees, as are Midnight in Paris and, after reading your thoughts, 50/50 and Drive. I’m especially interested in 50/50, as I think Joseph Gordon-Leavitt is a superb actor. And I totally agree with your pick of Minny as a favorite!
While I wasn’t a fan of Horrible Bosses (I found it too much of a “The Hangover” wannabe), Jennifer Aniston’s character was easily the best, and it was so nice to see her in a non-Rachel-esque role for once.
I have to admit, I have yet to see most of the movies featured here (it’s been a slow film year for me), but I was thrilled to see two of my favorite characters (Adam and Minnie) listed here. I completely fell in love with Adam, and bawled my head off through half of 50/50. I rooted for Minnie, and found myself wishing that I could know both characters in real life. I’m definitely looking forward to checking out the other characters you’ve listed, and maybe revisiting this list to see how my opinions of them measure up.
Ehem… Melissa McCarthy, not Megan… Anyways, your list is cool! I would’ve put Caeser in the first spot, though.
You’re right! How sloppy of me, I outta be ashamed. I’ll be sure to fix it as soon as possible. Thanks for finding that!
Charlie Day’s character is based on Charlie from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. If it was exactly the same, it should be, without a doubt, in your top10!
