5) No Country for Old Men (2007)
![]()
The Coen Brothers nab their first Oscar after Fargo for their dark and unforgettable movie about a hunter who gets his hand on 2 million dollars. The relatively unknown [to American audiences] Javier Bardem was able to nab an Oscar for his chilling role as Anton Chigurh. Unlike some of the other movies on the lower end of this list, Bardem’s Chigurh carries this movie heavily because his performance is simply one of the most horrifying and mesmerizing performances out of this list.
4) Slumdog Millionaire (2008)

I hated this movie before I even saw it. I felt it robbed The Dark Knight of its place as a best picture contender. It was only after my friends forced me to watch it did I realize how beautiful it was and how wrong I had been. Very smartly written and brilliantly executed by Danny Boyle, Slumdog Millionaire broke down a cultural wall for me and I’ve never seen the Indian people in the same way again. It even gave me the courage to accept NBC’s Outsourced for a little while. [mistake] And find me someone who hates the ending credits, and I’ll show you someone who’s about to get punched in the face.
3) Crash (2005)

Like I stated earlier, I recently watched this movie and I thought it was simply beautiful. Sure I’m likely biased because I saw this movie very recently and saw the movie at the very bottom of the totem pole, Chicago, like 2 years ago, but emotionally, this movie packs a punch. It’s intricately done and very well written. I definitely recommend watching this movie if you like stories of intertwined people similar to Babel and Traffic.
2) The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (2003)

I can watch this movie over and over again. After two great movies, the final in the trilogy is the most satisfying and a great way to end a great franchise. Words cannot describe the amazing set pieces, thrilling action sequences, fantastic mythology, and satisfying cinematography. Simply unforgettable.
1) The Departed (2006)
Complex, well-acted, and humongously satisfying, Martin Scorsese got his long deserved Oscar. With leads like Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Wahlberg, Matt Damon, and Jack Nicholson, how can you not like this movie? It’s simply the most unforgettable on my list and is well deserved of my [amateur] number 1 ranked approval.

Very well said!! Personally I’d put Return of the King in the first position, but that’s because I’m a LOTR geek. Very good choices!!
Oh I’m a sucker for LOTR too! It was such a good franchise. I also plan to do a post about the extended editions I saw recently. They were just so amazing!
