Lets be honest, video games are awesome. But every now and then it is good to take a step back and make sure that your relationship to your Xbox or PC is a healthy one. Justin Davis at IGN has written an insightful article on the role that gaming plays in his life. He analyzes the pros and cons in an honest manner. “Would you recognize if you were abusing the hobby that you love?”
I found this paragraph from the piece to be the most thought provoking:
“It’s important for gamers to have mastery of their own mind. Are you grinding out a level in World of Warcraft because you’re truly enjoying the experience, or are you doing it to replace missing feelings of self-worth that you don’t want to confront? Do you revel in your virtual successes to avoid the uncomfortable internal dialogue regarding your abandoned gym routine?”

I understood this article to be a reality check. A chance to detach yourself and confirm that your motives are pure. Not a Debbie downer.
I also encourage you to check out Why Video Games Matter by the same author for the positive perspective on gaming.
